Free online PNG to DOC converter

A legacy document-management system, older word processor, or submission portal may require a Word .doc file instead of an image. The conversion usually embeds the PNG on a document page; it does not make the image contents editable unless optical character recognition (OCR) is added.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format used for screenshots, scanned pages, interface captures, diagrams, logos, and other graphics. It uses lossless compression, supports transparency, and is created by programs such as Microsoft Paint, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Inkscape, scanners, and operating-system screenshot tools. PNG stores pixels rather than word-processing structure, so text inside the image remains part of the picture.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word’s older binary document format, associated mainly with Word versions through Word 2003 and with systems that require legacy compatibility. A DOC file can contain paragraphs, tables, page layouts, and embedded images, allowing a PNG to be submitted as part of a printable word-processing document. Current Word versions normally use .docx, which has a newer file structure and is preferable when the recipient does not specifically require DOC.

How to convert a PNG to DOC

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the PNG-to-DOC conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .png file.
3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
4. Download the resulting .doc file and open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer.

This method requires no installed software. It generally creates a DOC containing the PNG as an embedded image, not editable text. Do not upload confidential images unless the service’s handling terms meet your requirements.

Using Microsoft Word

1. Create a blank document.
2. Choose Insert → Pictures → This Device and select the PNG.
3. Use Picture Format to set image dimensions, alignment, and text wrapping.
4. Choose File → Save As, select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc), and save.

Word may display a compatibility warning because DOC cannot retain every feature supported by newer DOCX files.

Using LibreOffice Writer

4. Choose File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (*.doc), and save.

Quality and compatibility limits

Embedding a PNG normally keeps its visual content, but the DOC file does not automatically contain editable characters. OCR is required for scanned pages, screenshots, and photographed documents. Word’s Insert → Pictures command does not perform OCR; use a separate OCR-capable application first, then proofread the extracted text because columns, handwriting, unusual fonts, skewed pages, and low-resolution images can produce errors.

Use the original PNG rather than a repeatedly exported copy. For scanned text, around 300 dpi is a useful starting point for printing or OCR, although a PNG may not contain reliable resolution metadata and the required pixel dimensions depend on the intended page size. Transparent areas can render differently in older Word versions, and image position or page breaks can change when the DOC is opened in another word processor. If DOC is not mandatory, save as .docx for current software and better feature compatibility.
