How to convert txt to doc file

A legacy application, submission portal, or older Microsoft Word installation may require a .doc file instead of plain text. Saving the text in Word format adds editable page layout and formatting while preserving the characters and line breaks that the source contains.

What the TXT format is

.txt is a plain-text format containing characters, line breaks, and sometimes tabs or spaces. It does not store fonts, colors, images, tables, margins, headers, footers, page breaks, comments, or tracked changes. Notepad, TextEdit, code editors, terminal tools, email systems, and data-export programs commonly create TXT files.

A TXT file also depends on a character encoding, such as UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252, or another code page. Opening it with the wrong encoding can turn accented letters and non-Latin characters into incorrect symbols. TextEdit may need to be switched from rich-text mode to plain-text mode before saving a file as TXT.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word’s older binary document format, used primarily by Word versions through Word 2003. It can store formatted paragraphs, fonts, styles, margins, page breaks, tables, images, headers, footers, and other word-processing data. Unlike TXT, DOC supports document layout and formatting that can be edited after import.

DOC is appropriate when a legacy program or receiving system explicitly requires .doc. .docx is the newer Word format and is generally preferable when the recipient accepts it because it is the current standard, usually smaller, and less dependent on legacy compatibility behavior.

Convert the file with Microsoft Word

  1. Open Word and select File → Open → Browse.
  2. Select the .txt file. If Word displays a text-encoding dialog, choose the encoding used by the source; UTF-8 is common but should not be selected blindly.
  3. Check the imported text for missing characters, unexpected symbols, incorrect line breaks, and tabs.
  4. Apply required fonts, headings, margins, page breaks, tables, or other formatting. TXT does not provide these elements automatically.
  5. Select File → Save As, choose Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc), enter a filename, and select Save. Word may display a compatibility warning because DOC cannot represent every feature supported by newer formats.

Convert the file with LibreOffice Writer

  1. Open LibreOffice Writer and select File → Open.
  2. Load the TXT file and choose the source character set and line-break type in the text-import dialog. Use Unicode (UTF-8) when that is the file’s actual encoding.
  3. Inspect the preview and imported paragraphs, then add any required document formatting.
  4. Select File → Save As, choose Word 97–2003 (*.doc) as the file type, and save the document.

Tab-separated exports may require manual conversion into a table in Word or Writer. Long lines and different newline conventions can also produce unexpected wrapping or paragraph breaks. After saving, reopen the DOC file and verify character encoding, line breaks, page count, tables, margins, and layout in the software used by the recipient.

Current office applications can open DOC, but some display compatibility warnings or alter layout when saving and reopening the older format. Use DOC only when required; otherwise save as DOCX.
