What the TXT format is
.txt is a plain-text format containing characters and line breaks without page layout, formulas, images, embedded files, or application-specific document objects. Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit in plain-text mode, Linux text editors, programming tools, and many export functions create TXT files.
TXT files commonly use UTF-8, but older files may use Windows-1252 or another character encoding. The encoding determines whether accented letters, mathematical symbols, and non-Latin scripts display correctly in the destination application.
What the TNS format is
.tns is the structured document format used by Texas Instruments TI-Nspire software and calculators. A TNS document can contain Notes pages, calculations, graphs, geometry, lists, spreadsheets, and other TI-Nspire objects.
Because TNS stores document structure and calculator-specific data, it is not a general-purpose text format. Renaming notes.txt to notes.tns does not convert the file and will not create a valid TI-Nspire document.
How to convert TXT to TNS
- Open compatible TI-Nspire computer software. Use the version that supports your calculator model, such as software for TI-Nspire CX or TI-Nspire CX II devices.
- Create a document with File → New TI-Nspire Document.
- Add a Notes page with Insert → Notes, or select the Notes tool in the document workspace.

.txtfile in a text editor, select the required text, and copy it. - Paste the text into the TI-Nspire Notes page. Recreate headings, tables, equations, and special symbols with TI-Nspire tools when plain-text characters do not represent them correctly.
