A recipient, document-management system, or office application may require a Word document for editing, comments, tracked changes, or controlled printing. Converting a plain-text file to DOCX adds document structure and formatting, but it cannot recover information that the source never contained.

What the TXT format is

.txt is a plain-text format that stores characters, line breaks, and sometimes tab characters without fonts, images, page settings, tables, comments, or revision history. Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit in plain-text mode, Vim, and code editors can create TXT files; logs, configuration files, email drafts, exported data, and notes commonly use the format.

The file's character encoding is separate from its .txt extension. Common encodings include UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252, and other regional encodings. Choosing the wrong encoding can replace accented letters, Cyrillic characters, symbols, or emoji with incorrect characters.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is Microsoft's Office Open XML word-processing format. A DOCX file is a ZIP package containing XML document data and related resources. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and other office applications can open and save it.

DOCX can store formatted paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, images, hyperlinks, headers and footers, page numbers, footnotes, comments, and tracked revisions. It also supports page size, margins, spacing, and other print-layout settings. DOCX files are normally larger than equivalent TXT files because they include this structure and formatting.

How to convert a TXT file

Using Microsoft Word

1. Open Word and select File → Open → Browse.
2. Select the .txt file. If it is hidden, change the file filter to All Files.
3. In the text-import dialog, select the encoding used by the source file. Choose UTF-8 only when the file was saved as UTF-8; inspect the preview for accented characters and symbols.
4. Format the imported text with headings, fonts, spacing, margins, lists, tables, or other required elements.
5. Select File → Save As, choose Word Document (*.docx), and save the file.

Using LibreOffice Writer

1. Open Writer and select File → Open, then choose the TXT file.
2. Set the correct character set and line-break option in the text-import dialog. UTF-8 is common for current files, but the source encoding determines the correct choice.
3. Check the imported characters and format the document.
4. Select File → Save As, choose Word 2007–365 (*.docx), and accept the format confirmation if LibreOffice displays a compatibility warning.

Quality and compatibility limits

Plain-text paragraphs normally become plain DOCX paragraphs; tabs and repeated spaces may need cleanup, and line wrapping or line-break settings can create unintended paragraph boundaries.

After saving, inspect character rendering, paragraph boundaries, list numbering, page breaks, headers and footers, and the first and last lines. If the TXT file contains CSV-like columns or other structured data, import that data into a table or spreadsheet first; spaces and tabs are unreliable substitutes for table cells.

Open the saved DOCX in the software used by its recipient and verify the layout there. Different applications can substitute fonts, change pagination, or interpret unsupported DOCX features differently.
