Convert SHS to DOCX

A legacy Windows Scrap file may contain text, a picture, or an embedded Office object that current Word cannot open directly. Recovering that content and saving it as .docx makes it editable in current office software and easier to share or archive.

What the SHS format is

.shs files are Windows Scrap Objects, an obsolete OLE-based container created when users dragged copied content from applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, or other OLE-enabled Windows programs to the desktop. A scrap can contain formatted text, spreadsheet cells, pictures, or an embedded object; it is not necessarily a complete source document.

The format was used mainly with older Windows and Microsoft Office versions. Current Windows installations generally lack the original Scrap object handler, so double-clicking an SHS file usually produces an unknown-file error. The extension does not reveal which type of content the file contains.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is the XML-based Word document format used by current Microsoft Word and supported for import and export by LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and other office suites. It stores editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, page layout, document properties, and other Word features in a ZIP-based package.

DOCX is an appropriate target when recovered scrap content must be edited in current Word, sent to another user, or placed in a modern document-management system. It cannot preserve every type of object that an SHS container may hold.

How to recover content and save it as DOCX

There is no dependable direct SHS-to-DOCX converter. The practical method is to identify and recover the object inside the scrap, then save that object from a compatible application.

1. Preserve the original. Copy the SHS file to a working folder and keep the original unchanged. Renaming sample.shs to sample.docx only changes the filename extension; it does not convert the OLE structure.
2. Check whether the container exposes usable content. On a copy, install a current version of 7-Zip and try opening the file or listing it from Command Prompt with 7z l "sample.shs". If 7-Zip recognizes the compound file, extract it to a separate folder with 7z x "sample.shs" -o"shs-extracted". This is an inspection and extraction step, not a conversion. Some SHS files will not be recognized, and extracted OLE streams may not be independently usable.
3. Open the extracted item according to its actual format. An extracted file may be RTF, HTML, plain text, an image, or an Office object. Open RTF, HTML, or text in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer, then use File → Save As and select Word Document (*.docx). Do not select the older .doc format unless compatibility with an old Word version is required.
4. Handle non-document content separately. Insert an extracted image into a blank Word document with Insert → Pictures, then save as DOCX. Open an extracted spreadsheet or presentation in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, PowerPoint, or LibreOffice Impress first; save a native copy if possible, then copy the required cells or slides into Word. A spreadsheet's formulas and interactive behavior will not become equivalent Word content merely by inserting it.
5. Use a legacy environment if extraction fails. The original Scrap handler or source application may be required to interpret the object. In an isolated, offline virtual machine containing a compatible older Windows and Office installation, try opening the scrap through the shell or dragging it back into the application that created it. Copy the recovered material into a current Word installation and use File → Save As → Word Document (*.docx). Do not expose unknown SHS files to an internet-connected legacy system.

Online converters and desktop alternatives

Major online services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar generally do not accept SHS as a direct input, and their supported formats can change. If extraction produces RTF, HTML, or an image, a reputable service may convert that intermediate file, but local Microsoft Word or LibreOffice conversion avoids uploading potentially confidential text or embedded OLE data. Do not upload an unknown SHS file to an unverified converter.

7-Zip is useful for testing and extracting recognizable compound-file contents; it does not understand the meaning of every Scrap object. Microsoft Word is the best desktop choice for preserving Word-oriented formatting after recovery, while LibreOffice Writer is a free alternative with less predictable handling of legacy objects.

Quality and compatibility limits

Recovered formatting, fonts, page breaks, links, metadata, formulas, embedded files, and OLE relationships may be missing or altered. An SHS file can also contain only a fragment copied from a larger document, so it may not contain the original document's headers, styles, or surrounding pages.

After saving the DOCX, inspect page breaks, non-Latin characters, tables, images, and embedded objects against a known copy or screenshot. Treat SHS files as potentially unsafe OLE containers: scan them, avoid double-clicking files from unknown sources, and open legacy content only in an isolated environment.
