Older Office users may have dragged an Excel range to the Windows desktop and later found only a .shs scrap instead of a workbook. Recovering it as .xls is useful when a legacy system requires the Excel 97–2003 format, but only scraps containing Excel data can produce a usable workbook.

What SHS files contain

.shs is the extension for a Windows Shell Scrap, created by older versions of Windows Explorer when content was dragged from an OLE-aware program into a folder or onto the desktop. Older Microsoft Office applications, Outlook, Internet Explorer, and other OLE applications could create scraps.

An SHS file is not an Excel workbook format. It is an OLE-based container that can hold an embedded object, a static copy of selected content, or a link to an original document. An Excel-originated scrap may contain a cell range with values, formulas, and formatting; a Word, PowerPoint, or web-originated scrap will not automatically become a meaningful spreadsheet.

Windows Vista and later do not provide normal Shell Scrap activation. SHS files were also a known malware delivery mechanism, so treat every unknown file as untrusted. File location is not inherently required for recovery; the original claim that a scrap must remain on the desktop is incorrect. A linked scrap, however, may require the original target file and path.

What XLS provides

.xls is the binary Excel workbook format used by Microsoft Excel 97 through Excel 2003. It supports worksheets, formulas, cell formatting, charts, and some VBA macros, and remains useful for older reporting systems and applications that explicitly require Excel 97–2003 workbooks.

Current Excel and LibreOffice Calc can open XLS files, but each worksheet is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns. Keep a verified .xlsx copy for ongoing work: XLSX supports larger worksheets and is the normal format for current Excel versions.

Recover an Excel scrap in a legacy environment

1. Make a forensic copy of the SHS file. Scan the copy on a current system, but do not regard an antivirus result as proof that embedded OLE content is safe.
2. Use a disposable, offline virtual machine that supports Shell Scrap handling, typically Windows XP, with a compatible copy of the source application. Do not open an untrusted SHS file on a normal workstation or enable macros, ActiveX controls, external links, or embedded content.
3. Identify the likely source application. If the scrap came from Excel, open it in the legacy environment by double-clicking it or, where supported, dragging it into a blank Excel workbook. If it opens in Word or another program, recover the content there instead.
4. If Excel displays a complete workbook, use File → Save As and select Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls). If it displays only a range or embedded object, copy that range into a new workbook before saving it as recovered.xls.
5. Before transferring the result out of the VM, inspect worksheet names, used ranges, formulas, dates, charts, named ranges, and external links. Save an additional .xlsx copy after validation if the recovered data will be maintained in modern Excel.

Do not rename file.shs to file.xls; changing the extension does not convert the Shell Scrap container into an Excel workbook. LibreOffice Calc can save an already recovered workbook as XLS through File → Save As, but it does not reliably open SHS files directly and can alter complex Excel features.

If normal activation fails, advanced users can inspect the compound-file streams with OLE analysis tools such as oletools in an isolated environment. Such tools may extract embedded native data, but they do not reliably reconstruct an SHS file as a workbook; extracted data must be identified and validated before opening.

Conversion limits and compatibility checks

A scrap made from an Excel selection may not include the complete original workbook. Other worksheets, workbook-level names, VBA modules, external connections, charts, and linked files can be absent even when the visible cells recover correctly. A scrap that contains only a link cannot restore data if its original workbook is unavailable.

Saving to XLS can remove unsupported features, invalidate digital signatures, and preserve potentially unsafe macros. Compare recovered formulas and displayed values with any available original, and remove or disable macros unless their source and purpose are verified.

Do not upload SHS files to web conversion services. Reputable general-purpose converters typically do not support Shell Scrap activation, and an upload can expose embedded business data or unsafe OLE content. Offline recovery with the original application is the appropriate method.
