How to convert bwd to docx file

A current office suite may not open a legacy BanglaWord file, while the recipient or archive may require an editable Word document. Converting it to DOCX also makes Bengali text easier to share, search, and revise.

What the BWD format is

BWD commonly denotes a document created by BanglaWord, a legacy Bengali word processor used to write and print Bengali documents. Depending on the version, a file may contain Bengali text, basic formatting, page layout, and references to legacy Bengali fonts. The .bwd extension is not a universal standard and can identify unrelated software, so confirm the originating application before conversion.

On Windows, right-click the file, select Properties, and check its description and the computer or program that created it. Do not rename .bwd to .docx; changing a filename extension does not change the internal format.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is Microsoft Word’s Office Open XML format. It is supported by current Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, OnlyOffice, and other office suites, and stores editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, and page settings in a structured package.

DOCX is preferable when a file must be edited in current Word, exchanged with other users, indexed by document-management software, or retained without depending on BanglaWord. It generally handles Unicode Bengali text more reliably than proprietary legacy formats.

Convert the file with BanglaWord

  1. Install the BanglaWord release that created the document. Run old software in a separate Windows virtual machine when necessary, and obtain installers from the publisher or a trusted archive. Scan downloaded files before opening them.
  2. Open the BWD file in BanglaWord and check multiple pages for missing characters, incorrect line breaks, images, and page-layout problems.
  3. Use File → Save As or File → Export. If the installed version offers RTF, save an RTF copy; some versions may also offer DOC. Do not overwrite the original BWD file. BanglaWord versions do not generally provide direct DOCX output.
  4. Open the exported RTF or DOC file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. In Word, select File → Save As, choose Word Document (*.docx), and save. In LibreOffice, select File → Save As, choose Office Open XML Text (*.docx), and confirm the format.
  5. Inspect the DOCX at normal zoom and in print preview. Check Bengali conjuncts, punctuation, fonts, tables, images, columns, headers, footers, page breaks, and total pagination.

RTF is usually the most useful intermediate format because it can retain basic text formatting. If BanglaWord offers neither RTF nor DOC export, save as plain text only as a last resort, then create a DOCX in Word or LibreOffice and restore the formatting manually. Plain text loses styling, tables, images, columns, page settings, and sometimes the original character encoding.

Online conversion options

Microsoft Word and LibreOffice do not normally import BWD directly, so installing either application alone is not a BWD converter. Services such as Zamzar and CloudConvert can be considered only when their current upload page explicitly lists BWD as an input format; otherwise they cannot interpret the file. Upload only nonconfidential documents, retain the original locally, and reject any service that merely changes the filename extension.

Encoding and compatibility problems

The main risk is legacy Bengali encoding. Some files use a font-based character map in which visible Bengali glyphs correspond to Latin or private codes rather than Unicode characters. The document may look correct on the original computer but become garbled when its old font is missing. Preserve the original BWD file and all source fonts, install the required font when testing the export, and verify whether the resulting text can be selected, searched, and copied as Bengali.

If the DOCX displays incorrect Bengali, repeat the export with the original font installed. If the text still uses a non-Unicode encoding, a verified encoding-conversion utility or manual re-entry may be required; changing fonts alone does not convert character data to Unicode. Compare the DOCX with the original program’s print preview or a reference PDF because conversion can change kerning, line spacing, tab stops, pagination, and page breaks. For long-term retention, keep the original BWD and a visually checked PDF/A alongside the editable DOCX.
