RIS files are plain-text citation files used by reference managers and databases. They store bibliographic data in a structured ASCII format, so a TXT file can only be converted to RIS if the text contains citation details that can be mapped into RIS fields.
There is usually no direct TXT to RIS conversion, because a TXT file is just unstructured text. In practice, you need to extract or format the citation information first, then save or export it as RIS.
How to convert txt to ris
If your TXT file contains references, you can use one of these approaches:
- Import the text into a reference manager that supports RIS export, then map the fields manually.
- Copy and paste citation data into a citation tool or reference manager and export as RIS.
- Use a script or converter if the TXT file follows a consistent reference format.
What the txt file must contain
To create a valid RIS file, the text should include bibliographic details such as:
- Author
- Title
- Publication year
- Journal, book, or source name
- Volume, issue, pages, DOI, or URL if available
If the TXT file is just free-form notes or full text, it cannot be converted to RIS without manual structuring.
Example of ris structure
TY - JOUR
AU - Smith, John
TI - Example title
PY - 2024
JO - Example Journal
SP - 1
EP - 10

Software that can help
Many reference managers can import text-based citation data and export RIS, including tools such as EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley. In some cases, you may need to use File → Import first and then File → Export to save the result as RIS.
Important note
RIS is not a general text format. A TXT file can only become RIS if its contents are converted into citation fields. If you already have properly formatted RIS text, you can usually save it with the .ris extension.
