How to convert txt to odt file

LibreOffice Writer and other office suites use ODT for editable documents with styles, page layout, and tables, so plain text must be converted before those features can be added. ODT is also a better format than TXT for sharing or archiving a formatted document.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format that stores characters and line breaks without fonts, headings, images, tables, page layout, or embedded document metadata. It is produced by Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit in plain-text mode, Linux text editors, programming tools, terminal commands, and applications that export logs or configuration data.

Common TXT content includes notes, source code, subtitles, logs, CSV-like data, and documentation. The file can use UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252, or another character encoding. Choosing the wrong encoding when opening it can corrupt accented letters and non-Latin characters.

What the ODT format is

ODT, or OpenDocument Text, is an XML-based word-processing format standardized by OASIS. An ODT file is a ZIP-based container that can store formatted paragraphs, character and paragraph styles, page settings, headers, footers, tables, images, hyperlinks, comments, and document metadata.

ODT is the native text format for LibreOffice Writer and is supported by Apache OpenOffice and other office suites. Its open standard reduces dependence on a single vendor's proprietary format and preserves document structure for later editing.

Using LibreOffice Writer

  1. Open LibreOffice Writer and select File → Open.
  2. Choose the .txt file. In the text-import dialog, select the encoding used by the source file, usually UTF-8, and check the preview for corrupted characters.
  3. Leave delimiter or separator options disabled for ordinary prose. Enable the appropriate separator only when the file contains tabular, tab-delimited, or CSV-like data.
  4. Apply headings, paragraph styles, page settings, tables, images, and other required formatting.
  5. Select File → Save As, choose ODF Text Document (.odt), enter the output filename, and save.

If the file only needs to be saved in an ODT container, open it and use File → Save As without adding formatting. The text and imported line structure are retained, but formatting, images, tables, and metadata cannot be recovered because TXT does not contain them.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TXT file, choose ODT as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload confidential or regulated data unless the service's storage, processing, and deletion terms are acceptable.

Using Apache OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice Writer provides the same basic workflow: open the TXT file, confirm the character encoding in the import dialog, make any formatting changes, then select File → Save As and choose ODF Text Document (.odt). Menu labels can vary slightly by version.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Conversion cannot restore formatting, images, tables, hyperlinks, or metadata that were never stored in the TXT file.
  • Windows commonly uses CRLF line endings, while Unix-like systems commonly use LF. Office software normally handles both, but verify line breaks when each source line must remain separate, such as in logs or source code.
  • If the output contains replacement characters or garbled text, reopen the TXT file with its actual encoding and save it again. Do not treat a damaged preview as evidence that the source text is corrupt.
  • Applications can render an ODT file differently when fonts, fields, page breaks, or application-specific extensions are involved. Use installed, widely supported fonts and reopen the saved file in the intended office suite to check pagination.
  • For source code and logs, use a monospaced font and disable automatic typographic substitutions if exact characters and spacing matter.
