Free online RTF to ODT converter

Some applications and document workflows require the editable OpenDocument Text format instead of .rtf. Converting locally in LibreOffice preserves an editable document, while 101convert.com can perform the conversion without installed software.

What the RTF format is

Rich Text Format (RTF) is a text-based format for exchanging formatted documents between word processors. Its control codes can represent fonts, sizes, colors, paragraph alignment, lists, tables, and basic images.

Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, macOS TextEdit, and many legacy business and document-management systems can open or create .rtf files. RTF commonly appears in older archives, email attachments, support-system exports, and workflows that need formatting without using a program-specific document format.

What the ODT format is

OpenDocument Text (ODT) is the word-processing format defined by the open OpenDocument standard. LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice use it as a native format, and current Microsoft Word versions can open and save ODT files with possible compatibility differences.

An .odt file is a ZIP-based package containing XML document content and related resources, including images, styles, metadata, and settings. Compared with RTF, ODT supports more structured document features, such as named styles, fields, automatic tables of contents, templates, and complex page layouts.

How to convert an RTF file

With LibreOffice Writer

1. Open LibreOffice Writer.
2. Choose File → Open and select the .rtf file. If it is not visible, change the file filter to All files.
3. Check the imported document, especially tables, lists, images, page breaks, headers, footers, and special characters.
4. Choose File → Save As.
5. Set the file type to ODF Text Document (.odt), choose a destination, and save the file with an .odt extension.
6. If LibreOffice asks whether to retain the ODF format, select Use ODF Format.

Do not merely rename .rtf to .odt; the file contents must be rewritten in the ODT format.

With LibreOffice from a terminal

For a batch conversion, create the destination directory first and run:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to odt --outdir output input.rtf

Replace input.rtf with the source path and output with an existing destination directory. LibreOffice creates an ODT file using the source file's base name. Close other LibreOffice processes if a headless conversion does not complete correctly.

With the online converter

Quality and compatibility limits

Paragraphs and basic character formatting generally transfer well, but RTF does not represent every ODT feature. Inspect complex tables, nested lists, text boxes, floating objects, section breaks, fields, footnotes, tracked changes, embedded objects, and headers and footers after conversion.

Missing fonts can change line wrapping, page breaks, and pagination. Install the fonts used by the original document on the conversion computer when visual layout matters; otherwise LibreOffice may substitute available fonts.

RTF support for images, tables, and layout varies by the program that created the file, so conversion results can differ even between two RTF documents. Keep the original RTF unchanged and compare the converted ODT with it before distribution.

ODT is intended for editable content rather than exact fixed-layout reproduction. If recipients need an unaltered visual rendering, review the ODT and export a separate PDF.
