How to convert rtf to word file

Some applications require Microsoft Word files for editing, submission, or archival, so an .rtf document may need conversion. Saving it as .docx usually preserves ordinary formatting and produces a file suited to current Word versions and office workflows.

What the RTF format is

Rich Text Format (RTF) is a text-document format designed to store formatted content in a relatively portable, plain-text-based structure. It supports fonts, sizes, bold and italic styles, alignment, lists, tables, and basic images.

RTF files are created by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, macOS TextEdit, legacy Windows WordPad, email software, and document-management systems that avoid a proprietary format. They commonly appear as exported reports, email attachments, and files produced by older applications. The usual extension is .rtf.

What the Word format is

“Word” usually means one of Microsoft Word’s document formats: .docx is the current Office Open XML format, while .doc is the older binary format used before Office 2007. There is no standard .word file extension.

.docx supports Word features that RTF may not represent fully, including styles, advanced page layout, headers and footers, comments, tracked changes, fields, embedded objects, and section formatting. It is a ZIP-based package of XML files and is often smaller than an equivalent RTF file, although the size depends on the document contents. Use .docx unless older software specifically requires .doc.

How to convert RTF to Word

Microsoft Word

  1. Open the .rtf file in Microsoft Word.
  2. Check paragraphs, tables, images, page breaks, and special characters.
  3. Select File → Save As.
  4. Choose Word Document (*.docx), select a destination, and save the file.
  5. For software that cannot open .docx, choose Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc) instead.

Word can open RTF directly, so an intermediate format is unnecessary. If the file opens in Protected View or as read-only, save a working copy before editing.

LibreOffice Writer

  1. Open the RTF file in LibreOffice Writer.
  2. Select File → Save As.
  3. Choose Word 2007–365 (*.docx) as the file type and save.
  4. Confirm the format warning, then reopen the result in Word or LibreOffice to check its layout.

Using the 101convert converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select the .rtf file, choose Word or .docx as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting document. Do not upload confidential or regulated content unless the service’s privacy, retention, and deletion terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility

Basic paragraphs, character styles, and simple lists usually transfer accurately. RTF cannot represent every Word feature, so inspect complex tables, floating or anchored images, text boxes, footnotes, fields, section breaks, tracked changes, embedded objects, hyperlinks, and unusual symbols after conversion.

Missing fonts can change line wrapping, page breaks, table widths, and pagination. Install or embed the required fonts only when licensing permits, then review the converted file on the computer or device that will print or display it.

Conversion to .doc can remove or alter newer Word features and may trigger compatibility warnings. Use .docx for current Microsoft Word versions and normal document exchange; use .doc only when a legacy application specifically requires it.
