Convert a PDF when you need to edit its text in Microsoft Word, reuse part of a document, or submit an editable .docx file instead of a fixed-layout PDF. Conversion creates a new document rather than recovering the original source file, so complex pages may need manual correction.

What the PDF format is

PDF, or Portable Document Format, preserves page appearance across operating systems, applications, and printers. Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, scanners, web browsers, and desktop-publishing software can create PDFs. Common examples include forms, invoices, manuals, contracts, reports, and print-ready files.

A PDF can contain selectable text, images, vector graphics, embedded fonts, annotations, links, and form fields. A scanned PDF may contain only page images; its text must be recognized with optical character recognition (OCR) before it becomes editable. A password-protected PDF may also require its password before export.

What the Word format is

Word normally means Microsoft Word's .docx format, an XML-based document format designed for editable, reflowable content. It supports styles, headings, tables, headers, footers, comments, tracked changes, mail merge, templates, and collaboration.

Use .docx for current versions of Word and most document workflows. Use the older binary .doc format only when a legacy application specifically requires it; saving to .doc can remove newer Word features.

How to convert a PDF to Word

Adobe Acrobat on Windows or macOS

1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
2. Choose File → Export To → Microsoft Word, or open All tools → Export a PDF and choose Word.
3. Select .docx as the output format and save the file.
4. Open the result in Word and inspect its page breaks, tables, columns, fonts, headers, footers, and images.

For a scanned file, run All tools → Scan & OCR → Recognize text first, select the document language, and then export it. Acrobat's paid desktop editions that include Word export are suitable for PDFs containing mixed text, images, tables, and OCR content.

Microsoft Word desktop

1. Open Word and choose File → Open → Browse.
2. Select the PDF.
3. Accept Word's notice that it will convert a copy of the PDF into an editable document.
4. Choose File → Save As and select Word Document (*.docx).

Word 2013 and later can open many text-based PDFs directly. This is convenient for short, simple documents, but columns, tables, positioned text boxes, graphics, and page breaks often need more repair than when exported with Acrobat.

Online converters

For non-confidential files, use Adobe's online PDF-to-Word converter, Smallpdf, or iLovePDF. Upload the file, choose Word or .docx, download the result, and remove local copies when finished. Online services may retain uploaded files for a stated period, so do not upload contracts, identity documents, financial or medical records, or proprietary material unless the provider's security and retention terms meet your requirements.

Browser conversion is useful when no desktop software is available, but it depends on an upload and may impose file-size, page-count, or OCR limits. A desktop application is preferable for sensitive files or repeated conversions.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion reconstructs an editable document from a fixed page layout; it does not restore the original Word file. Multi-column pages, text boxes, footnotes, layered graphics, embedded fonts, forms, signatures, and complex tables may become separate objects, move during reflow, or lose their original behavior.

OCR can misread low-resolution scans, handwriting, unusual fonts, rotated pages, skewed images, and text over colored backgrounds. Set the correct recognition language and proofread names, numbers, dates, addresses, and legal wording against the PDF.

Check the output in the Word version and on the computer where it will be edited. Missing fonts can change line wrapping and pagination; substitute fonts can also alter tables and headers. Digital signatures generally do not remain valid after the document is modified or converted.

Keep the original PDF as the authoritative copy. If the corrected Word file must retain fixed pagination, export it back to PDF and compare the new pages with the source before distribution.
