A recipient, legacy business system, or older Microsoft Word installation may require a .doc file instead of an .rtf document. Converting creates an editable Word 97–2003 document without manually rebuilding the text and formatting.

RTF format

RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a Microsoft-developed document interchange format. It stores text with formatting control words, such as \b for bold text and \par for a paragraph break, so files can be exchanged between many word processors.

Applications including Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple TextEdit, and older business applications can open or create .rtf files. RTF commonly appears in exports from document-management systems, email templates, generated reports, and cross-platform text exchanges.

RTF handles ordinary text formatting, paragraphs, lists, tables, images, headers, footers, and page settings. Support is less consistent for Word-specific features such as revision data, complex layouts, embedded OLE objects, fields, equations, and form controls.

DOC format

.doc is the binary Microsoft Word format associated mainly with Word 97 through Word 2003. It can store formatted text, tables, pictures, page setup, comments, fields, and other Word document data.

Use DOC when the receiving software explicitly requires the older Word format. For current editing workflows, .docx is usually preferable because it is the newer Office Open XML format; do not substitute it when a system specifically requests .doc.

Changing an RTF filename from .rtf to .doc does not convert the file. The document must be saved or exported through software that writes the DOC format.

Convert the file

To convert without installing software, upload the .rtf file to the converter on 101convert.com, select DOC as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .doc file.

In Microsoft Word, open the RTF file and select File → Save As. Choose Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc), enter a filename ending in .doc, and save. If Word displays a compatibility warning, continue only if the legacy DOC format is required.

In LibreOffice Writer, open the source file and select File → Save As. Set File type to Word 97–2003 (.doc), save the file, then confirm Use Word 97–2003 Format if prompted.

For local batch conversion with LibreOffice, create the output folder and run:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to 'doc:MS Word 97' --outdir output input.rtf

Replace input.rtf with the source filename. The exact executable name may be soffice on some systems.

Check the converted document

Open the DOC file in the application that will receive it. Check page breaks, fonts, tables, images, headers, footers, numbered lists, and non-Latin text; unavailable fonts can change line wrapping and pagination.

Complex RTF content may be simplified during export because DOC is an older format. Inspect documents containing embedded objects, linked images, unusual bullets, section-specific layouts, fields, equations, or form controls.

Conversion does not create macros, but DOC is a macro-capable Word format. Do not enable macros or embedded content in documents from an untrusted source. Keep the original .rtf until the converted file has been accepted by the required program.
