Free online DBF to DOC converter

A DBF table may need to be delivered as a .doc file when recipients must print, annotate, or include records in a Word-based report without using database software. The conversion presents database rows as a document table and does not create an editable database copy.

DBF and DOC formats

DBF is a dBase-family table format that stores records in named fields, such as names, dates, amounts, and status codes. It is used by dBase and xBase applications, FoxPro and Visual FoxPro systems, older accounting and business software, and GIS datasets; a shapefile commonly stores its attribute table in a related .dbf file.

Some DBF tables require companion files. Memo-field text may be stored separately in .dbt or .fpt files, while index files such as .ndx, .mdx, and .cdx can define application-specific sorting. Keep related files in the same folder when opening or exporting the source table.

DOC is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format, primarily associated with Word 97 through Word 2003. A DOC file can contain formatted text, tables, page breaks, headers, and images, making it suitable for distributing a readable record list. Use DOC only when a recipient or system specifically requires it; .docx is generally preferable for current Word workflows.

Convert the table

Close the program that uses the DBF file before conversion so pending changes are written to disk. If the table contains memo fields, retain its matching .dbt or .fpt file; the DBF may otherwise contain only references to the memo text.

1. Upload the .dbf file to 101convert.com.
2. Select DOC as the output format and start the conversion.
3. Download the generated .doc file.
4. Open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer and check field headings, record count, dates, numbers, memo values, and non-English characters.

For selected or presentation-ready records, prepare the data before conversion. Filter unwanted rows, apply the required sort order, remove internal fields, and rename unclear headings in the database application where possible. Indexes, relationships, validation rules, and queries are not transferred to a Word document.

Desktop alternative

LibreOffice Base can open many dBase tables without converting them first. Use File → New → Database, select the dBase connection type, choose the folder containing the DBF file, and open the table. Copy the required records into LibreOffice Writer, then use File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 (.doc).

This method is useful when the document needs only a filtered subset of fields or requires manual layout before saving. Confirm the exported table after reopening it in Word, because DOC is an older format and Writer may display a compatibility warning when saving.

Compatibility and layout limits

A DBF table has no page-layout instructions, so column widths, fonts, page orientation, and page breaks are chosen during conversion. Wide tables can produce narrow columns or rows split across pages. In Word, use Layout → Orientation → Landscape, reduce margins, resize columns, or split the source into separate tables.

The DOC file contains exported values rather than DBF data types and database behavior. Editing text in the document does not update the DBF source, and a later database change does not update the DOC file.

Older DBF files can use DOS/OEM code pages such as 437, 850, or 866 instead of Unicode. If accented, Cyrillic, or other characters display incorrectly, open the source with the correct code-page setting and export it again. Check identifiers with leading zeros, such as account or postal codes, and verify how the conversion handles deleted records and empty dates.
