Convert INDD to DOC

A recipient may require an editable Microsoft Word file, or an older document-management system may accept only the legacy .doc format. InDesign has no direct, layout-preserving export from .indd to .doc, so the practical workflow passes through PDF and Word.

What the INDD format is

.indd is Adobe InDesign's native, editable publishing format. It stores page geometry, text frames, styles, layers, master pages, tables, and placement information for graphics used in brochures, books, magazines, packaging, and other page-layout projects.

An INDD project may depend on separately linked images and installed fonts. To reproduce the source accurately, the owner can use File → Package to collect the document, linked assets, fonts where licensing permits, and a report; packaging is not required for conversion itself.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's older binary document format, used by Word versions through Office 2003 and by some legacy business systems. It supports editable paragraphs, basic tables, comments, and standard office formatting, but it does not represent InDesign's fixed page composition or full typography and graphics model.

Word's newer .docx format is generally preferable when the receiving system accepts it: it uses an XML-based structure and supports newer Word features. Save as .doc only when compatibility with a legacy application specifically requires it.

How to convert the file

Desktop workflow with InDesign, Acrobat, and Word

1. Open the project in Adobe InDesign and check for overset text, missing links, missing fonts, incorrect page size, and wrong page order.
2. Choose File → Export, select Adobe PDF (Print) for print-oriented pages or Adobe PDF (Interactive) for screen content, and export the PDF with an appropriate preset. Do not export pages as low-resolution images if the Word file must contain editable text.
3. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro and choose All tools → Export a PDF, select Microsoft Word, and export as .docx. Acrobat's menu labels can vary by version.
4. Open the resulting .docx in Microsoft Word. Inspect text, columns, tables, headers, footers, page breaks, images, hyperlinks, and special characters.
5. Choose File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc) when the destination requires the legacy format. Reopen the saved file in Word or LibreOffice Writer and check it again.

Online conversion

Most online services do not accept native INDD files because rendering requires InDesign and its external assets. Export the PDF locally, then use a reputable PDF-to-Word service such as Adobe Acrobat online to create a .docx file. Open that file in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .doc if necessary.

Do not upload confidential contracts, unpublished designs, personal data, or commercially sensitive files unless the service's retention, processing, and deletion terms meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limits

PDF-to-Word conversion reconstructs a word-processing document from the rendered PDF; it does not preserve the original InDesign structure. Text can be split into separate boxes, multi-column reading order can change, and tables, footnotes, anchored objects, text on paths, and complex layouts can convert incorrectly.

Transparency, clipping paths, blends, precise typography, linked graphics, and other InDesign effects may become approximate Word objects or flattened images. A PDF made from scanned pages requires OCR before it can produce editable text; Acrobat provides this through All tools → Scan & OCR.

For an identical visual result, deliver the PDF. For genuinely editable content, expect to correct or rebuild the converted document in Word; the conversion is not reversible.
