Convert INDD to IDML
Export editable InDesign INDD documents to XML-based IDML and check version compatibility.
How to convert indd to idml file
- Documents
- Rating: 2.3/5
A recipient may need an .idml file to open a layout in an older supported version of Adobe InDesign or to process its XML-based structure in another publishing workflow. Exporting IDML from the original document retains editable layout data; exporting to PDF does not.
What INDD files contain
INDD is Adobe InDesign’s native document format. Graphic designers, publishers, production artists, and editorial teams use it for books, magazines, catalogs, brochures, advertisements, packaging layouts, and other multi-page documents.
An .indd file stores pages, parent pages, layers, text frames, styles, swatches, placed-object references, and InDesign-specific settings. It usually references linked images rather than embedding them. INDD is version-sensitive: a document saved by a newer InDesign release may not open in an older release.
What IDML files contain
IDML means InDesign Markup Language. It is an XML-based interchange format packaged in a ZIP-compatible container with an .idml extension. Its separate markup files make it useful for interchange, automated XML processing, and recovery attempts when a native document is damaged.
InDesign CS4 and later can open IDML files, although an older version may simplify or omit features it does not support. IDML is not a self-contained project archive: linked graphics, fonts, plug-ins, and external data sources are normally separate from the file.
IDML is useful as an additional archival copy, but retain the original .indd, linked assets, font information, and a reference PDF. An XML-based IDML package is not a guarantee that every future InDesign version or third-party tool will reproduce the layout identically.
Exporting with Adobe InDesign
Adobe InDesign is the preferred conversion tool because it writes IDML directly from the document’s native layout structure. You need a version of InDesign that can open the source .indd; an older InDesign installation cannot convert a document created only by a newer release.
- Make a copy of the source
.inddfile and open the copy in Adobe InDesign. - Check missing graphics in Window → Links. Resolve missing-font warnings before export where possible.
- Choose File → Save As.
- Select InDesign CS4 or later (IDML) in the format or file-type list.
- Enter a filename ending in
.idml, select the destination, and save. - Open the exported file in the recipient’s InDesign version and inspect the pages, text flow, links, and preflight results.
For delivery, use File → Package on the working InDesign project to collect linked graphics and a report; include the exported .idml file in that delivery folder. Include fonts only when their licenses permit redistribution, and provide a PDF reference copy so the recipient can compare output.
Alternatives and online services
IDMarkz by Markzware is a desktop alternative for opening supported InDesign documents and exporting IDML when Adobe InDesign is unavailable. Confirm that its current version supports both the source InDesign release and the required IDML output before buying or processing production files.
No general-purpose online converter is a dependable recommendation for editable INDD-to-IDML work. Many web services that accept INDD produce PDF or image output instead, and uploading an INDD file can expose unpublished text, artwork, and client data. Use a hosted service only when it explicitly states that it outputs editable .idml, documents its InDesign or conversion-engine support, and is approved for the document’s confidentiality requirements. Test its output against the source before using it for production.
Compatibility checks
IDML improves backward interchange but does not reproduce unsupported features perfectly. Objects or settings introduced after the recipient’s InDesign version can be changed, omitted, or converted to an older equivalent. Check plug-in objects, advanced typography, variable fonts, transparency and effects, interactive elements, animation, EPUB settings, scripts, data-merge settings, and conditional text.
Font substitution can alter line breaks, overset text, page breaks, and page count. Install the same font versions where licensing allows, then run Window → Output → Preflight, inspect Window → Links, and compare the result with the supplied PDF.
Do not rename .indd to .idml. The extensions identify different internal file structures; changing the filename does not convert the document.

Frequently asked questions
Will my INDD layers and editable text be preserved in IDML?
Yes, IDML normally preserves the document structure, including layers, pages, text frames, and editable text. It is an interchange format rather than a flattened image, although some newer or format-specific features may be changed or omitted.
Does converting INDD to IDML reduce image quality?
No, exporting to IDML does not normally rasterize or recompress placed images. Their displayed quality still depends on the original image files and their effective resolution in the layout.
Will fonts and linked images work after converting INDD to IDML?
They may not work automatically because IDML can retain references to fonts and linked graphics rather than making every external resource available. Missing fonts or links can cause substitutions, warnings, or changes in text wrapping and appearance.
Why does my IDML document look different when I open it?
Differences usually result from unsupported features, missing fonts or links, or opening the IDML in a different application version. Text reflow, changed effects, and altered transparency are possible even though the main page and layer structure is retained.
