Convert INDD to INDL

Create an INDL library from selected reusable elements in an Adobe InDesign INDD project.

How to convert indd to indl file

Designers convert an INDD project to an INDL library when they need to reuse or share selected layouts, logos, text, or graphics in other InDesign documents. The conversion is an extraction of library items, not a format-preserving conversion of the complete document.

What the INDD format is

.indd is Adobe InDesign's native document format, used by publishers, graphic designers, agencies, and production teams for books, magazines, brochures, packaging, flyers, and other page layouts. An INDD file can contain pages, text frames, placed graphics, tables, styles, layers, links, master pages, and document settings.

What the INDL format is

.indl is an Adobe InDesign Library file. It stores reusable objects such as text frames, graphics, groups, logos, recurring advertisements, headers, icons, and selected page compositions for insertion into other InDesign documents.

An INDL library is useful for centralizing repeatable design components and keeping them available independently of the source layout. It is not an alternate container for an entire INDD file: it does not retain the complete page sequence, master-page structure, document settings, or editing workflow as one equivalent document.

How to create an INDL library from an INDD file

  1. Open the .indd file in Adobe InDesign. If the original must remain unchanged, save a working copy first.
  2. Choose File → New → Library, enter a library name, and save the file with the .indl extension. InDesign opens the library in the Libraries panel. The exact panel wording can vary by InDesign release.
  3. Select an object or group on the page, then drag it into the library panel or use the panel's command to add the selected item. Give each item a descriptive name.
  4. For a page composition, select all objects that should remain together, group them if necessary, and add the selection as one library item. Repeat for other pages or components. If the installed version provides an option to add all page items, review the resulting entries and remove anything unnecessary.
  5. Save the library, then drag an item into a blank test INDD document to confirm that it opens and retains the required appearance and editability.

The resulting library contains only the objects added during these steps. It does not automatically convert every page or document setting. For a complete project transfer, keep the original INDD file and use File → Package to collect the document, linked graphics, and fonts where licensing permits.

Compatibility and limitations

Open the library in the same or a newer compatible InDesign release when possible. A newer InDesign version may create library content that an older release cannot open or interpret reliably; test the target version before distributing the file.

Library items can retain editable InDesign structure, but their appearance may depend on linked graphics, fonts, color profiles, and effects available on the receiving system. Keep linked assets with the library or package the complete INDD project separately. Font files are not automatically a substitute for obtaining the necessary font licenses.

Do not confuse an .indl file with Adobe's cloud-based CC Libraries feature. CC Libraries are managed through the Creative Cloud Libraries panel and are not the same as a locally saved legacy InDesign Library file.

No reputable online converter can reliably turn an INDD document into a functionally equivalent INDL library, because the user must decide which objects become library items. Generic online converters also cannot preserve InDesign editing behavior and may expose confidential layouts when files are uploaded. Adobe InDesign is the appropriate tool for this conversion; no separate desktop converter is required.
