How to convert tmd to doc file

Older Microsoft Word installations, document-management systems, and recipients with a .doc-only workflow may require this conversion. Export the file rather than renaming its extension so formatted content remains editable and the original document can be preserved.

What the TMD format is

In SoftMaker products, .tmd is a native TextMaker word-processing format that can contain formatted text, tables, images, headers, footers, fields, and layout information. Older TextMaker and SoftMaker Office releases use this extension, but .tmd is also used by unrelated applications; confirm which program created the file before opening it.

Changing document.tmd to document.doc does not convert the internal format. It only changes the filename and can make the file harder for the correct application to identify.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format, associated mainly with Word 97–2003. It remains appropriate for older Word software, systems that accept only Word 97–2003 files, and recipients who specifically request it. It is generally less compatible than .docx with modern layout features, accessibility metadata, and newer Word functionality.

How to convert the file in TextMaker

  1. Install the SoftMaker TextMaker version that created the file, or use a newer TextMaker release that explicitly supports that older format. FreeOffice TextMaker may open some TMD files, but compatibility depends on the file version.
  2. Open TextMaker and select File → Open. Choose the .tmd file; if it is not shown, change the file filter to All files.
  3. Inspect the document before saving, including page breaks, tables, images, text boxes, headers, footers, footnotes, fields, equations, and fonts.
  4. Select File → Save as, choose Microsoft Word 97–2003 (*.doc) or Word 97–2003 document, specify a filename ending in .doc, and save to a new location.
  5. Open the exported file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer and compare its pagination and content with the original.

Menu names vary by TextMaker version. If TextMaker offers both Save as and Export, choose the Microsoft Word 97–2003 or .doc output option. LibreOffice Writer can verify or resave the result, but it is not a dependable primary reader for every SoftMaker TMD variant.

Online conversion options

Reputable services such as CloudConvert, Zamzar, and Convertio can be checked when their current format lists explicitly identify the input as SoftMaker TextMaker .tmd and the output as .doc. Support for this uncommon extension can change, and a service listing another application's TMD format is not sufficient.

Upload only a copy, download the result, and inspect it before delivery. Do not use an online converter for confidential, regulated, or unpublished documents unless its handling and deletion policies meet your requirements. Local TextMaker conversion is preferable when exact source identification or privacy matters.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion to the older DOC format can change page breaks, font metrics, text-box positioning, fields, tracked changes, equations, images, and newer TextMaker features. Keep the original .tmd, install the fonts used by the document where possible, and review every page of the exported file. If the recipient accepts it, .docx is usually a better modern target; use .doc only for a specific compatibility requirement.

If TextMaker cannot open the file, identify the creating application from its source, metadata, or file association and use that program's own export function. A TMD file from an unrelated application may not be a document at all.

Frequently asked questions

Will my .tmd formatting stay the same when converted to .doc?

Most text, paragraphs, tables, and basic page layout should remain editable, but complex formatting can change in the older DOC format. Check page breaks, headers, footers, tables, and positioned objects after conversion.

Are .tmd files still editable after converting to .doc?

Yes, the result is an editable Word document rather than a fixed image. However, some TextMaker-specific features, advanced fields, embedded objects, or newer formatting may be simplified or flattened.

Why do fonts or page breaks change from .tmd to .doc?

This usually happens when the original fonts are unavailable or when the two formats calculate spacing and pagination differently. Substituted fonts can change line wrapping, table positions, and the total number of pages.

Can I convert a .doc back to .tmd without losing anything?

Not necessarily, because conversion to the older DOC format can discard or simplify features that do not have a matching representation. Keeping the original .tmd file is important if you need to preserve every formatting detail.
