How to convert tmd to docx file

A legacy TextMaker document may need conversion when Microsoft Word or another office suite requires an editable DOCX file for sharing or further editing. Converting instead of renaming the extension also preserves the document's internal file structure.

What the TMD format is

TMD commonly identifies a native document created by SoftMaker TextMaker. Depending on the TextMaker version, it can contain formatted text, tables, images, styles, page layouts, headers, footers, fields, and other word-processing elements. Older TextMaker installations and files moved from older computers are common sources of TMD files.

The extension is not unique to TextMaker: specialist applications also use .tmd for their own data. Identify the program that created the file before choosing a converter. A TMD file from another application must normally be exported with that application's software.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is Microsoft's Office Open XML word-processing format. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, Google Docs, and many document-management systems can open it.

DOCX stores editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, tracked changes, and metadata. It is generally more compatible than the older binary .doc format when recipients need to revise the document.

How to convert the file

Using TextMaker

  1. Install a TextMaker version that supports the file. SoftMaker TextMaker is the preferred option for a TextMaker-created TMD; FreeOffice TextMaker may also work if it can open that version of the file.
  2. Open the program and select File → Open. Choose the .tmd file; set the file filter to All files if it is not listed.
  3. Check the document before saving, including tables, images, text boxes, page breaks, headers, footers, fields, fonts, and non-Latin text.
  4. Select File → Save As, choose Word 2007–365, DOCX, or the equivalent Word format, and save to a new filename such as converted-document.docx.
  5. Open the DOCX in the recipient's intended software, preferably Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer, and check pagination and object placement.

Do not change .tmd to .docx in the filename alone. Renaming changes only the label; it does not convert the internal format. Keep the original file as a backup.

Using an online converter

Services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can be used only when their current format lists explicitly show .tmd as an input and .docx as an output. Upload the file, select DOCX, run the conversion, and download the result; availability can change because TMD is less widely supported than DOC, DOCX, or ODT.

Do not upload confidential, regulated, password-protected, or proprietary documents unless the service's storage, deletion, and privacy terms satisfy your requirements. For a TextMaker TMD, local conversion in TextMaker is usually the safer and more predictable choice.

Quality and compatibility checks

Conversion between word-processing formats can alter custom fonts, floating objects, text boxes, equations, footnotes, section breaks, linked images, fields, and printer-dependent pagination. A missing font can change line wrapping and page count even when the conversion itself succeeds. Install required fonts or replace them deliberately, then inspect every page.

TextMaker-specific features may have no exact DOCX equivalent. Revision history, embedded objects, fields, macros, and unusual layout settings can be discarded, flattened, or disabled. If the source program reports unsupported elements, export from that program to .rtf or .odt only as a fallback, open the intermediate file in LibreOffice Writer, and save it as DOCX; this may retain basic text and formatting but can lose more advanced layout.
