How to convert aww to doc file

Recipients using Microsoft Word or a document system that does not support Ability Write may need an AWW file in editable DOC format. DOC also remains necessary for some older Word installations and upload systems that reject DOCX.

What the AWW format is

.aww is the native document format of Ability Write, the word processor included with Ability Office. It can store editable text, formatting, tables, images, headers, footers, and other word-processing content. AWW is proprietary and has limited support outside Ability Office.

AWW is not the same format as AbiWord's .abw files. Renaming .aww to .doc does not convert the document; the file must be opened and saved by software that understands its internal structure.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format, associated primarily with Word 97 through Word 2003. It supports editable text, page layout, tables, images, headers, footers, and printing, and remains useful when an older application or document-management system specifically requires it.

Current versions of Word and most modern office suites generally prefer .docx, which is newer and usually more compact. Convert to DOC only when compatibility with the receiving application requires the legacy format.

How to convert AWW to DOC

Using Ability Write

  1. Install or open Ability Office and start Ability Write. The application that created the file is the most reliable reader of its native format.
  2. Choose File → Open, select the .aww file, and check that its text, images, tables, and page layout display correctly.
  3. Choose File → Save As.
  4. Select Microsoft Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc) or the equivalent Word 97–2003 option, specify a new filename ending in .doc, and save.
  5. Open the resulting DOC in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer and inspect page breaks, fonts, tables, images, headers, and footers.

Keep the original AWW file unchanged. If the installed Ability Office release does not list DOC as an output type, save from Ability Write to .rtf, open the RTF in LibreOffice Writer, and use File → Save As to select Word 97–2003 (*.doc). This fallback can change styles, fields, floating objects, and complex tables.

Using an online converter

A reputable service such as Zamzar may offer AWW-to-DOC conversion; available formats can change, so verify that its current conversion list includes both .aww as an Ability Write document and .doc as the output.

  1. Upload the AWW file to the service.
  2. Choose DOC as the target format and start the conversion.
  3. Download the result, give it a new filename, and open it in Word or LibreOffice for visual comparison.

Do not upload confidential, personal, or commercially sensitive documents unless the service's retention and deletion terms are acceptable. An online converter may omit embedded objects or alter layout, and it cannot fix information that the source reader fails to interpret.

Quality and compatibility limits

Basic paragraphs and common character formatting usually transfer better than document-specific features. Custom fonts, text boxes, floating objects, section settings, fields, tracked changes, macros, embedded files, and unusual table layouts may be changed or discarded.

Install the source document's fonts before opening or converting it, use the original paper size and orientation, and compare the DOC page by page with the AWW. If the recipient accepts DOCX, create a separate DOCX copy after checking the conversion; do not replace the original AWW.
