Convert MSO to DOC

A legacy Word installation, document-management system, or recipient may require an editable .doc file instead of an .mso attachment. Conversion is possible only after identifying what the MSO file represents, because .mso is used for several unrelated Microsoft file types.

What the MSO format is

.mso is not one standardized document format. It may identify a Microsoft Office HTML support file, an embedded OLE resource from an Outlook HTML message, or a file created by older Microsoft Organization Chart software. An MSO file is often a supporting resource rather than a complete document.

An Outlook-related file may be named oledata.mso and appear beside an .htm or .html message. It can contain data used to render embedded Office objects; it is usually not the attachment or message text itself. Microsoft Office and legacy organization-chart users may also encounter standalone MSO files associated with the program that created them.

Renaming .mso to .doc does not convert it. The extension must not be changed unless an application has actually exported the file in Word format.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's binary document format, used by Word 97 through Word 2003 and still readable and writable by many current word processors. It supports editable text, paragraph and character formatting, tables, images, headers, footers, and some embedded objects.

DOC is appropriate when an older Word installation or document system specifically requires Word 97–2003 format. For current Word workflows, .docx is generally preferable because its XML-based structure is more interoperable and less vulnerable to corruption from binary-format limitations.

How to convert an identified source to DOC

For an MSO file beside HTML

1. Keep a backup of the complete folder, including the .mso, .htm, .html, images, and other related files.
2. Open the related HTML file in a browser. If it displays the intended message or document, open that HTML file in Microsoft Word with File → Open.
3. In Word, select File → Save As, choose Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc), and save a new file.
4. Reopen the DOC and inspect images, tables, hyperlinks, page breaks, fonts, headers, and footers.

If Word cannot open the HTML correctly, try LibreOffice Writer: open the HTML, then use File → Save As and select the Word 97–2003 format. Complex Office objects and CSS-based layouts may require manual repair.

For an Outlook HTML message

Open the original message in Outlook and save the visible attachment through its attachment menu or Save As. Convert that attachment in its native application, rather than converting oledata.mso. If the required content is only the message body, open or copy the message into Word and use File → Save As → Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc).

For Microsoft Organization Chart data

Open the file with the Microsoft Organization Chart component or the Office application that created it. Export or copy the chart into Word, then save the containing document as .doc. A standalone organization-chart MSO file may not contain ordinary Word text and cannot be converted faithfully by a general document converter.

Using an online converter

No general online service can reliably interpret every raw MSO file. After identifying the source as HTML, RTF, or another supported document type, services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar may convert that source to DOC if their current format list explicitly supports it. Do not upload confidential email, business, or personal data; download and visually check the result.

Quality and compatibility limits

HTML-to-DOC conversion can change CSS layouts, positioned elements, unsupported fonts, page breaks, tables, hyperlinks, and image placement. ActiveX, OLE, macros, and objects that depend on Outlook or the original Office installation may be omitted or trigger security warnings.

If the creating application offers a direct DOC export, use it instead of converting through HTML or an MSO resource. Retain the original files and compare the converted document with the source before removing them.
