What the ENEX format is

ENEX is Evernote's XML-based export format. It stores one or more notes, including titles, note HTML, creation and modification dates, tags, notebook metadata, and sometimes attached files or resources encoded within the XML.

Evernote creates ENEX files through File → Export → Export Notes or an equivalent export command. You encounter them when moving notes between Evernote accounts, backing up notebooks, importing notes into another application, or transferring data from Evernote Legacy.

What the DOC format is

DOC is the binary Microsoft Word document format used mainly by Word 97–2003 and older office suites. It is suitable for editable letters, reports, printed notes, and systems that specifically require a .doc file instead of DOCX, PDF, HTML, or Markdown.

DOC supports formatted paragraphs, tables, images, headers, and footers, but its layout and feature support are older than DOCX. A DOC file may therefore be preferable for compatibility with older Word installations, document-management systems, or legacy upload forms.

How to actually convert ENEX to DOC

Using Evernote and LibreOffice

1. Open Evernote Desktop and choose File → Import Notes → Evernote XML (.enex). Select the ENEX file and import it into a temporary notebook.
2. Open each imported note and export it as HTML using File → Export Note → HTML, if that command is available in your Evernote version. For many notes, export the notebook or selected notes as HTML in one operation.
3. Open the exported HTML file in LibreOffice Writer. Check headings, lists, tables, images, hyperlinks, and attachment placeholders.
4. Choose File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (.doc), and save the document. If LibreOffice shows a format-warning dialog, choose Use Word 97–2003 Format.

For command-line conversion after producing DOCX files, LibreOffice can write the older format with:

ENEX does not convert directly through LibreOffice because LibreOffice is not an Evernote XML importer. HTML or DOCX must be produced first.

Using an online converter

Avoid this method for notes containing confidential, regulated, or proprietary information unless the service's handling and deletion policies meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limitations

ENEX may contain multiple notes, but DOC is normally treated as one document; a batch conversion may combine notes, create separate DOC files, or flatten notebook structure depending on the converter. Review the output before distribution.

Note tags, notebooks, reminders, internal Evernote links, note history, and metadata usually do not map cleanly to DOC. Embedded images may retain their appearance, while audio, video, PDFs, and other attachments may become links, icons, or separate files rather than editable document content.

Evernote note content is stored as HTML inside ENEX, so unsupported HTML, custom fonts, tables, code blocks, and complex layouts can change during import or export. Keep the original ENEX file as the authoritative backup and verify the resulting DOC in the version of Word or office software that will open it.
