Free online ENEX to RTF converter

ENEX files are Evernote exports, while RTF is accepted by many word processors and desktop publishing applications. Conversion is useful when a recipient needs editable rich text instead of an Evernote archive or when notes must be opened without Evernote.

What the ENEX format is

ENEX means Evernote XML Export. It is an XML-based interchange file created by Evernote when notes are exported through File → Export Notes or a similar export command. One ENEX file can contain one note or an entire notebook, including note titles, dates, tags, HTML-formatted content, and attached resources.

ENEX is intended for importing notes into Evernote, not for direct editing in ordinary word processors. A text editor can display its XML structure, but that does not produce a readable document with the original formatting.

What the RTF format is

RTF (Rich Text Format) stores formatted text, including fonts, sizes, colors, paragraphs, lists, tables, and basic images. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many other applications can open it.

RTF is suitable when the recipient needs an editable document with broad desktop compatibility. It is not a replacement for the ENEX archive: Evernote tags, reminders, notebooks, internal note identifiers, and some note metadata do not have standard RTF equivalents.

How to actually convert ENEX to RTF

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the ENEX-to-RTF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .enex file.
3. Choose RTF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .rtf file and open it in Word, LibreOffice Writer, or another RTF-compatible application.

Using Evernote and a desktop word processor

1. Import the file into Evernote using File → Import Notes → Evernote XML (.enex). Menu names differ between Evernote versions.
2. Open the imported note, select its content, and copy it to Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. For multiple notes, copy each note into a separate document or combine them in one document with headings.
3. In the word processor, choose File → Save As, select Rich Text Format (.rtf), and save the document.
4. Reinsert or verify images and attachments if they were not transferred during copy and paste.

Quality and compatibility limitations

ENEX note bodies commonly contain Evernote's HTML, so formatting conversion depends on how the converter interprets that HTML. Basic paragraphs, bold, italic, lists, and inline images usually transfer better than nested tables, checkboxes, handwriting, audio, PDFs, and other attachments.

Converting an ENEX file containing many notes may produce one RTF document rather than separate files. If separate documents are required, export or convert each note individually, or split the resulting document manually.

Keep the original .enex file as the archival copy. RTF preserves presentation-oriented content but cannot preserve the full Evernote notebook structure, tags, note history, synchronized status, or all attachment metadata.
