What the SPV format is

.spv is the native output format for IBM SPSS Statistics. It stores the results displayed in the SPSS Output Viewer, including pivot tables, charts, model summaries, warnings, syntax output, and notes. SPSS Statistics creates SPV files when you save an Output Viewer window; older releases commonly used .spo instead.

An SPV file is not a normal document format. Its contents are organized as SPSS output objects, so Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and generic archive tools cannot reliably open it. The SPSS version used to create the file can also affect whether another installation opens it correctly.

What the RTF format is

RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a document format supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many document-management systems. It can store formatted paragraphs, fonts, colors, tables, page breaks, and embedded or linked graphics without requiring the original statistical application.

RTF is useful when recipients need to revise the report, add comments, copy tables into other documents, or archive results in a relatively open format. It does not preserve SPSS-specific interaction, pivot-table behavior, analysis metadata, or the underlying dataset.

How to actually convert SPV to RTF

Using IBM SPSS Statistics

1. Open the .spv file in IBM SPSS Statistics. Use File → Open → Output if the file does not open by double-clicking.
2. Choose File → Export... from the Output Viewer.
3. Set the export scope to All visible objects or select only the tables, charts, and notes required for the report.
4. In the file-type or format list, select Word/RTF, Rich Text Format, or the equivalent label used by your SPSS release.
5. Choose an output filename ending in .rtf, select the destination folder, and confirm the export.
6. Open the resulting file in Word or LibreOffice Writer and check page breaks, table widths, fonts, and chart placement before distributing it.

Quality and compatibility limits

SPSS exports output objects as document content rather than as fully editable SPSS objects. Pivot tables may become ordinary RTF tables, and charts may be inserted as images; their underlying values and formatting controls are then no longer available in the word processor.

Review wide tables because RTF export can cause wrapping, clipped columns, or page overflow. Fonts unavailable on the receiving computer may be substituted. Output containing non-Latin characters, special symbols, or uncommon statistical notation should be checked after opening the RTF in the target application.

An SPV file normally contains analysis results, not the original data file. Converting it to RTF cannot recover missing records or recreate analyses. Keep the source .sav, syntax file, and SPV alongside the RTF when reproducibility is required.
