Recipients often need an .xls workbook because a legacy reporting system accepts Excel 97–2003 files or because tables must be edited without IBM SPSS Statistics. An .spv file contains statistical output, so it must be exported from an SPSS Viewer rather than opened as source data in Excel.
What SPV files contain
SPV is the IBM SPSS Statistics Viewer output format. SPSS users save Viewer contents as SPV files after running analyses; the file can contain pivot tables, frequencies, regression output, warnings, notes, syntax listings, and charts.
An SPV file is not an SPSS case-data file. The underlying records are normally stored in a separate .sav file, while the SPV file stores the displayed results and report layout. IBM SPSS Statistics is the primary application for opening and exporting SPV output.
What XLS provides
XLS is the binary Microsoft Excel 97–2003 workbook format. It supports multiple worksheets, formatted cells, formulas, and editable table values, making it suitable for older Excel installations and systems that specifically require XLS.
XLS has strict worksheet limits: 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet. Use .xlsx when the receiving system permits it; XLSX supports 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per worksheet and avoids many legacy-format restrictions.
Exporting an SPV file with IBM SPSS Statistics
- Copy the original SPV file before exporting, for example
results.spv. - Open it in IBM SPSS Statistics with File → Open → Output.
- In the Output Viewer, select specific objects only if the workbook should contain selected tables or charts. Otherwise, export all Viewer contents.
- Choose File → Export.
- Select an Excel format in the export dialog. If
Excel 97–2003 (*.xls)is available, choose it and set the destination filename. - Set the export scope to all visible output or selected output, then complete the export.
- Open the workbook in Excel and verify the worksheets, wide pivot tables, footnotes, and suppressed values.
SPSS versions that offer only an XLSX export can still produce XLS: export as .xlsx, open that file in Microsoft Excel, then use File → Save As → Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls). LibreOffice Calc can also save an XLSX workbook as .xls, but Excel is preferable for checking the final legacy workbook.
Do not rename results.spv to results.xls; changing a filename extension does not convert the Viewer output.
When the original data is needed
If the requirement is to sort, filter, calculate, or reanalyse individual survey or research records, request the associated .sav data file instead of exporting the SPV report. Open the SAV file in SPSS Data Editor and use File → Save As to select an Excel format, or export a CSV file when a flat data table is sufficient.
Exporting SPV output creates a report-oriented workbook. Multi-level column labels, merged heading cells, significance markers, repeated labels, and footnotes may need manual restructuring before the result can be used as a normalized dataset.
Compatibility and conversion limits
Charts in SPSS output commonly export as static images or embedded objects, not as editable native Excel charts. Pivot tables usually become worksheet cells, but their visual layout can change during export.
An older SPSS release may not open output created by a newer release. Use a current IBM SPSS Statistics version, or ask the sender to export the output to Excel, PDF, HTML, or a compatible SPV version.
GNU PSPP is not a dependable SPV conversion tool: it is primarily an SPSS-compatible statistics package for data and syntax, not a general reader for IBM SPSS Viewer output. Claims that PSPP or a “PSPP File Conversion Service” can reliably convert arbitrary SPV files should not be relied on.
No major reputable general-purpose online converter consistently supports IBM SPSS Viewer output. Because SPV files can contain confidential clinical, financial, survey, or research results, export locally in SPSS rather than uploading them; use an online service only when its SPV support and data-handling terms have been explicitly verified.
When XLS is mandatory, keep the exported .xlsx master copy as well. Excel may warn about incompatible features during XLS saving, and tables exceeding XLS row or column limits cannot be represented fully in one XLS worksheet.
