Web browsers and some email or document tools can create and open MHTML files. It is commonly used for offline viewing, archiving web pages, and preserving page layout in a portable package.

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a widely supported document format for exchanging formatted text between word processors. It preserves basic formatting such as fonts, bold, italics, lists, tables, and some images, while remaining more portable than many proprietary document formats. RTF is commonly used for editing in word processors, sharing formatted documents across platforms, and importing content into office suites such as Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and similar editors.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable way to convert MHTML to RTF is to open the MHTML file in a word processor or browser-based editor that can interpret the archived HTML, then export or save it as RTF. Because MHTML is essentially a packaged web page, the conversion usually works best when the source page is simple and text-focused.

1. Open the MHTML file in a compatible application. In Microsoft Word, use File → Open and select the .mhtml or .mht file. In LibreOffice Writer, use File → Open and choose the file if your installation supports it.
2. Review the imported content. Check whether images, tables, headings, and links appear correctly. Since MHTML can contain web-specific layout elements, some formatting may not translate perfectly into RTF.
3. Export or save as RTF. In Word, choose File → Save As and select Rich Text Format (*.rtf). In LibreOffice Writer, use File → Save As and choose Rich Text Format (.rtf).
4. Confirm the result by reopening the .rtf file in a word processor to verify that the text and formatting were preserved as expected.

If you need a command-line workflow, a practical approach is to first extract or convert the MHTML content to editable HTML and then use a document converter such as Pandoc to produce RTF. For example, if you have a clean .html version of the page, pandoc input.html -o output.rtf can generate an RTF document. This works best when the source is well-structured HTML rather than a heavily scripted web page.

Notes on quality and limitations

Formatting fidelity is the main limitation in this conversion. RTF supports rich text, but it does not fully reproduce modern web layout, CSS effects, responsive design, embedded scripts, or complex interactive elements found in MHTML. Images may be preserved, but positioning and scaling can change. Web fonts, background graphics, and advanced page styling are often simplified or lost.

For best results, use a source MHTML file that represents a mostly static article or report. Pages with heavy scripting, dynamic content, or unusual HTML structures may convert poorly. If the goal is to preserve the page exactly as viewed in a browser, RTF is usually not the ideal target; if the goal is to reuse the text in a word processor, RTF is a good interoperable choice.
