Document-management systems, print workflows, and mobile viewers often accept PDF but not MHTML. Saving an MHTML page as PDF creates a fixed-layout file that is easier to share, print, annotate, and archive without relying on browser support.

What the MHTML format is

MHTML, also called MIME HTML or MHT, is a MIME multipart/related file that packages an HTML page with related resources such as images, stylesheets, and sometimes scripts. The usual extensions are .mhtml and .mht.

Web browsers and enterprise applications use MHTML to save complete web pages, help documentation, email content, and other browser-rendered records in one file. Microsoft Edge and compatible Chromium-based browsers can usually open MHTML files; support and rendering behavior vary by browser version. A saved file may still request external resources if the original page did not embed them.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-oriented document format designed to preserve text placement, images, paper size, and print layout across operating systems and applications. It is widely supported by browsers, document-management systems, print services, and mobile devices.

PDF is appropriate when a recipient needs to print, annotate, attach, or archive the saved page. It is not an interactive copy of the original website: scripts, animations, live data, editable web forms, video, and dynamically loaded content may be absent or converted into static output.

Convert an MHTML file in a browser

1. Open the .mhtml or .mht file in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. If double-clicking does not work, use Open with and select the browser.
2. Wait for the page to render. Check that expected images, styles, and text are visible before printing.
3. Open the print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS.
4. Select Save to PDF as the destination. On Windows, Microsoft Print to PDF is another available destination.
5. Set paper size, orientation, scale, and margins. Enable Background graphics when colored panels or background images must appear. Disable or enable headers and footers according to the required output.
6. Review the print preview for clipped content and poor page breaks, then select Save and use a filename ending in .pdf.
7. Open the PDF and verify page breaks, images, selectable text, links, and any sensitive information before distributing it.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Browser print output normally preserves visible text and images but does not create editable PDF form fields from HTML forms. Select text in the result if searchability is required.
• Fonts that were not embedded in the MHTML file and are unavailable on the conversion system may be substituted, changing line wrapping and pagination.
• Long pages can create inconvenient page breaks. Adjust scale, margins, orientation, and paper size in print preview rather than relying on the browser’s defaults.
• Links may remain clickable, but scripts, animations, video, and other interactive behavior generally do not survive printing.
• Review PDF metadata, hyperlinks, headers, footers, and hidden or unintended content before sending the file to another person.
