What MHTML files contain

MHTML, also called MIME HTML or a web archive, packages an HTML page and many of its resources into one MIME-encoded file. It commonly uses .mhtml or .mht and can include HTML, images, CSS, and other resources embedded as MIME parts.

MHTML was used by Internet Explorer and is supported by Microsoft Word and various archival or reporting systems. It is a snapshot of web content, not a word-processing document: its layout may depend on browser CSS, viewport width, scripts, web fonts, or resources that were unavailable when the page was saved.

What DOCX files provide

DOCX is the Office Open XML word-processing format used by Microsoft Word and supported by applications such as LibreOffice Writer. A .docx file is a ZIP-based package containing XML document structure, styles, images, tables, headers, comments, and other editing data.

DOCX is suitable for editable reports, review workflows using comments or tracked changes, and document-management systems that accept Office files. Its content is organized into paragraphs, tables, and pages rather than browser elements and responsive web layouts.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting a browser layout into a word-processing layout does not guarantee an identical visual result. Responsive designs, CSS positioning, custom web fonts, navigation menus, forms, embedded video, interactive charts, and JavaScript-generated content can be omitted, flattened, or rearranged.

Images usually transfer when they are embedded in the MHTML file. Resources loaded after the page was saved, blocked external resources, and script-generated sections may be absent from the archive and cannot be recreated during conversion.

Open the DOCX in Word or another target editor before distributing it. Check heading levels, hyperlinks, image placement, table widths, page breaks, and character encoding; wide web tables may require Layout → Orientation → Landscape or manual resizing. If recipients need a fixed visual record, retain the original MHTML file or provide a reviewed PDF in addition to the editable DOCX.
