A recipient, records system, or word processor may accept editable RTF files but not native WordPerfect documents. Converting a copy of a .wpd file to .rtf makes its text usable in a wider range of editors while retaining common formatting.

What the WPD format is

WPD is the filename extension most commonly used for Corel WordPerfect documents. WordPerfect files can contain formatted text, styles, tables, headers and footers, footnotes, graphics, page-layout settings, and WordPerfect-specific codes or features.

The extension alone does not guarantee that a file is a WordPerfect document: some unrelated applications have also used .wpd. If the file does not open in WordPerfect or conversion fails, identify the application that created it before changing its format.

What the RTF format is

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a text-based interchange format introduced by Microsoft. It supports editable text and common document elements including fonts, paragraph formatting, bold and italic text, lists, tables, page breaks, and limited image data.

Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPerfect, and many other editors can open RTF. It is appropriate when the recipient must edit the document; use PDF instead when the page appearance must remain fixed.

Convert the file

To convert without installing software, upload the .wpd file to 101convert.com, select RTF if the output format is requested, start the conversion, and download the resulting .rtf file. Keep the source file and open the downloaded RTF in the application that will receive or edit it.

For a WordPerfect document, Corel WordPerfect is usually the most dependable desktop option because it reads its native format directly:

1. Open the original .wpd file in WordPerfect.
2. Choose File → Save As.
3. Select Rich Text Format (RTF) in the file-type or format list.
4. Save under a new name, such as contract.rtf; do not replace the original .wpd file.
5. Open the RTF in the target editor and inspect the result before distributing it.

LibreOffice Writer can import many WordPerfect files. Open the file with File → Open, then use File → Save As and choose Rich Text Format (.rtf). Import support varies by WordPerfect version and document complexity; use WordPerfect when available if LibreOffice displays missing content or altered layout.

Compatibility checks

RTF cannot fully preserve every WordPerfect-specific feature. Macros, merge fields, document variables, proprietary formatting codes, advanced numbering, complex table behavior, and specialized legal-document layout may be removed or changed. Tracked changes and comments can also be handled differently by the receiving editor.

Check text for missing characters, then inspect headers, footers, footnotes or endnotes, page numbers, tables, images, lists, and page breaks. Missing fonts can change line wrapping, table widths, and pagination on another computer. Retain the original .wpd as the editable archival copy; create a PDF separately after verifying the RTF if a fixed-layout version is required.
