Free online WPD to ODT converter

Conversion is needed when a WordPerfect file must be edited in LibreOffice Writer or another OpenDocument-compatible editor, or shared without requiring WordPerfect. An ODT copy keeps the document editable in a standardized format while the original .wpd file remains the source record.

WPD format

WPD most often identifies a document created by Corel WordPerfect or an earlier WordPerfect release. WordPerfect documents can contain formatted text, tables, headers, footnotes, styles, images, page-layout controls, fields, and other application-specific formatting.

The .wpd extension is not exclusive to WordPerfect, and WordPerfect file structures vary by software version. If a converter cannot read the file, first verify that it opens correctly in WordPerfect or LibreOffice Writer; an encrypted, damaged, or unsupported legacy WPD variant may require the original WordPerfect software.

ODT format

ODT is OpenDocument Text, the word-processing format in the OpenDocument Format (ODF) standard. LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, Collabora Office, and other ODF-compatible editors can open and save ODT files.

An ODT file is a ZIP-based package containing XML content, styles, metadata, and embedded resources. It preserves editable text, common formatting, tables, images, footnotes, and page settings, unlike a PDF, and does not tie the document to WordPerfect.

Convert the file

To convert without installing software, upload the WordPerfect .wpd file to the converter on 101convert.com, choose ODT as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Open the downloaded file in an ODT-compatible editor before sending or replacing the original.

For offline conversion, LibreOffice Writer is a practical option because it can import many WordPerfect documents and saves ODT natively.

1. Open the .wpd file in LibreOffice Writer.
2. Check the text, tables, page breaks, headers, footnotes, and images before saving.
3. Select File → Save As.
4. Choose ODF Text Document (.odt), enter a new name such as document.odt, and save.

For scripted conversion, LibreOffice can run without its graphical interface:

The command creates an ODT file with the same base filename in the output directory. Test representative files before applying it to a large archive.

Compatibility checks

Text, common styles, ordinary tables, headers, footnotes, and standard images usually transfer, but WordPerfect-specific layout codes, custom numbering, document variables, merge fields, macros, embedded objects, protected content, and legacy drawing elements may not reproduce exactly.

Font substitution can change line wrapping, page breaks, table widths, and pagination. Conversion does not guarantee that the receiving computer has the original fonts, so install licensed matching fonts where possible or review the layout with available replacements.

Macros and WordPerfect automation do not convert into LibreOffice macros. Compare legally significant or publication-ready documents against the original, including page count, headings, tables, footnotes, images, and final text. Keep the original .wpd file unchanged after conversion.
