Free online DOCX to ODT converter

Recipients using LibreOffice or another OpenDocument-based suite may require an editable .odt file instead of a Word document. Converting the file preserves its editable structure more reliably than copying and pasting text, although complex Word features still need inspection.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is Microsoft Word's default document format, introduced with Word 2007. It is a ZIP-based Office Open XML package containing XML for text, styles, relationships, headers, footers, images, and other document resources.

Microsoft Word, Microsoft 365, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs exports, and document-management systems commonly produce or use DOCX files for reports, contracts, assignments, templates, and business correspondence. The format supports advanced features, but its appearance can vary between applications when documents use unusual fonts, fields, tracked changes, SmartArt, macros from macro-enabled sources, or complex page layouts.

What the ODT format is

.odt, or OpenDocument Text, is an editable word-processing format based on the openly specified OpenDocument standard (ISO/IEC 26300). LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer use it as a native format, and other compatible office suites can open it.

ODT stores text, styles, metadata, images, and document structure in a standardized package instead of relying on Word-specific features. It is appropriate when a recipient requires an OpenDocument file, when a document will be edited in LibreOffice, or when an organization uses open formats for long-term access. ODT is not guaranteed to look identical to DOCX in every application.

Using LibreOffice Writer

1. Open the .docx file in LibreOffice Writer.
2. Check page breaks, headings, lists, tables, images, headers, footers, footnotes, comments, and tracked changes.
3. Select File → Save As.
4. Choose ODF Text Document (.odt) in the file-type list, choose a destination, and select Save.
5. If Writer asks whether to keep the current format, choose Use ODF Format.
6. Close and reopen the saved .odt, then inspect the layout before sending it.

Using Microsoft Word

Recent desktop versions of Word can also open DOCX and save it as ODT. Open the file, select File → Save As, choose OpenDocument Text (*.odt), and save. Reopen the ODT in the application that will receive it because Word may represent some OpenDocument features differently from LibreOffice.

Using the command line

LibreOffice can perform a batch or headless conversion without opening its graphical interface:

On systems where the executable is named soffice, use:

soffice --headless --convert-to odt --outdir ./converted input.docx

The output normally receives the same base filename with an .odt extension. If a file with that name already exists, move or rename it before converting to avoid an overwrite conflict.

Using the online converter

For a conversion without installing software, upload the DOCX file to the converter on 101convert.com, select ODT if required, and download the resulting .odt file. Do not upload confidential contracts, personal records, or unpublished material unless the service's handling and deletion policies meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limits

Ordinary paragraphs, character formatting, lists, standard styles, tables, and inline images usually transfer well. Review documents containing floating objects, text boxes, SmartArt, embedded charts, equations, section-specific page settings, complex tables, form controls, citations, content controls, custom fields, or embedded objects.

Install the source document's fonts before converting. Font substitution can change line wrapping, pagination, table dimensions, and the position of floating elements. If exact visual appearance matters, keep a PDF export as a fixed-layout reference alongside the editable ODT.

Word-specific fields, advanced revision information, comments, and some embedded objects may be changed or discarded. A macro-enabled source such as .docm requires separate care: VBA macros are not reliably preserved in ODT, and a normal .docx does not provide a reliable way to carry them through conversion. Keep the original DOCX as a backup and verify document properties if author names, comments, or other metadata must be removed before distribution.
