Free online PDF to ODT converter

People convert a PDF to ODT when a document must be edited in LibreOffice Writer or another OpenDocument-compatible word processor. The original PDF is designed to preserve page appearance, while an ODT file stores editable document content.

PDF and ODT formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe and standardized as ISO 32000. It is a fixed-layout format used for forms, manuals, invoices, reports, publishing proofs, and documents intended to display or print consistently across systems.

A PDF can contain selectable text, embedded fonts, vector graphics, images, annotations, forms, and security settings. Some PDFs are scans containing page images only; their text is not editable until optical character recognition (OCR) creates a text layer.

ODT (OpenDocument Text) is the text-document format in the OpenDocument Format (ODF) standard, used primarily by LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer. An .odt file is an XML-based package that can store editable paragraphs, styles, tables, images, comments, tracked changes, and page settings.

ODT is useful for editable source documents, sharing with LibreOffice users, and workflows that require an open standard rather than a proprietary word-processing format. Microsoft Word can open and save ODT files, but documents with complex layouts may change when moved between Word and LibreOffice.

Convert a PDF to ODT

1. Open the PDF-to-ODT converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the PDF file.
3. Select ODT as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .odt file.
5. Open the file in LibreOffice Writer and check its text, headings, tables, images, page breaks, headers, and footers before editing or sharing it.

The converter can be used free without installing software. Use a local desktop workflow instead when the PDF contains confidential, regulated, or otherwise sensitive material that should not be uploaded.

Desktop options and OCR

LibreOffice can import many PDFs into LibreOffice Draw. This is useful for viewing or making limited page-level edits, but Draw treats PDF pages largely as positioned objects; it does not reliably reconstruct a normal Writer document. For a short, simple document, copy the required text or objects from Draw into Writer, then use File → Save As and select ODF Text Document (.odt).

For a scanned PDF, run OCR before conversion. OCRmyPDF is a desktop command-line option that adds a searchable text layer to a PDF:

Convert searchable.pdf afterward. Compare names, dates, figures, punctuation, and accented or non-Latin characters with the original scan, because OCR can misread them.

Quality and compatibility limits

PDF is page-oriented; ODT is flow-oriented. Conversion software must infer reading order, paragraphs, lists, columns, table cells, headings, and font substitutions from page content. An editable ODT is not expected to be a pixel-identical copy of the PDF.

Letters and single-column reports with selectable text usually produce the best results. Multi-column pages, brochures, fillable forms, footnotes, text over images, complex tables, equations, unusual fonts, and tightly positioned graphics commonly require manual cleanup in Writer.

Password-encrypted PDFs require the password before authorized conversion. A converted ODT is a new document, so PDF digital signatures, certificate validation, and fixed-layout form behavior do not remain valid in the output file.
