A PDF needs conversion when a Chinese digital-library system or a licensed SuperStar Reader installation accepts only its proprietary PDG e-book format. For ordinary sharing, editing, or archiving, PDF remains the compatible format and should not be changed to PDG.
What PDF is
PDF (Portable Document Format) preserves page layout, fonts, graphics, and pagination across operating systems. Businesses, schools, publishers, government offices, and individuals use it for forms, reports, scanned books, invoices, and print-ready documents. PDF files can contain selectable text, vector graphics, raster images, bookmarks, links, forms, signatures, and embedded fonts.
What PDG is
PDG is the proprietary, page-oriented e-book format associated with SuperStar Reader and the Chinese SuperStar digital-library system. It is not a standardized successor to PDF and has no broadly implemented public conversion specification. PDG books commonly package compressed scanned or rendered pages with book metadata and may include library-specific access controls.
Its advantages apply mainly inside the system that created it: controlled distribution, catalog integration, and compact storage for scanned page images. PDG is generally unsuitable for editing, web publication, long-term interchange, or use in ordinary document readers. A PDG conversion can remove PDF text layers, vector graphics, bookmarks, links, forms, accessibility data, and embedded signatures; OCR may be required if the resulting pages must be searchable.
How to convert PDF to PDG
- Confirm the required format. Ask the library, publisher, or application operator whether it requires PDG or accepts PDF, PDF/A, images, or an upload through its own portal. Renaming
.pdfto.pdgdoes not convert the file. - Use the authorized production workflow. If the institution supplies a SuperStar Reader or publisher-side import tool with a PDF import or book-production function, import the source PDF, set page size, image resolution, color mode, OCR, metadata, and access permissions, then export or publish through that tool. The exact menus and output structure depend on the licensed SSReader or library system version.
- Validate the result in the target system. Open the generated book in the same SSReader or library service that will distribute it. Check every page, rotation, crop, color conversion, text search, bookmarks, metadata, and permission setting. A file that merely has a
.pdgextension is not evidence of a valid PDG book.
There is no dependable general-purpose desktop or online converter that can create a universally valid PDG file from an arbitrary PDF. Products such as Total PDF Converter should not be selected solely because a format list claims PDG output: test the output with the exact target system and version, and obtain the vendor's documentation before processing production files. If no authorized import tool is available, request a PDG package from the publisher or library operator rather than using an unofficial reverse-engineering utility.
Tools for the practical alternatives
If the recipient can accept PDF, use Adobe Acrobat Pro, PDF24 Creator, or Ghostscript to optimize the file, convert images, apply OCR, or produce PDF/A for archival storage. Acrobat Pro can use File → Save as other → Optimized PDF; PDF24 provides desktop compression and OCR functions; Ghostscript can rewrite a PDF with controlled image downsampling. These tools create PDF variants, not PDG.
Online services from Adobe Acrobat, Smallpdf, or iLovePDF can compress, OCR, or convert PDFs to common formats, but they do not provide a reliable PDG export. Do not upload confidential, copyrighted, or personally identifiable documents to an online service unless its retention and processing terms are acceptable. For a genuine PDG requirement, an institution's licensed conversion service is safer and more compatible than an unverified website.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Rendering PDF pages into PDG can rasterize text and vector artwork, reducing sharpness and preventing text selection.
- Downsampling or JPEG compression reduces size but can damage small type, line drawings, seals, and characters; retain the original PDF and test at the intended reading resolution.
- OCR accuracy depends on scan quality, language support, page layout, and the target system's OCR implementation.
- PDF encryption, digital signatures, embedded multimedia, interactive forms, layers, and unusual fonts may not survive page rendering or proprietary import.
- PDG compatibility is tied to the producing library or reader ecosystem, and DRM or account restrictions can prevent opening, copying, printing, or migrating the result.
