Free online PDF to MD converter

Markdown is useful when PDF content must be edited in a code editor, stored in a documentation repository, or processed by a static-site generator. Converting it extracts the document's text and structure into a smaller, plain-text .md file.

What the PDF format is

PDF (Portable Document Format) preserves page layout, fonts, images, and print settings across operating systems. Word processors, desktop-publishing applications, scanners, web browsers, and reporting systems commonly create PDF files, so they appear in contracts, manuals, invoices, academic papers, and archived records.

A PDF stores content for visual presentation rather than simple sequential editing. Its text may be split into positioned fragments, and a scanned PDF may contain only page images with no selectable characters.

What the MD format is

MD is the usual filename extension for a Markdown document. Markdown uses plain-text characters such as # for headings, - for lists, and ** for emphasis; Markdown processors convert these markers to HTML or other output formats.

MD files work well in code editors, Git repositories, documentation systems, static-site generators, and note-taking applications. They are small, searchable, diffable, and easy to edit, but they do not preserve fixed page layout, exact typography, or every PDF design element.

How to convert PDF to MD

Using 101convert.com:

1. Open the PDF-to-MD converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the source .pdf file.
3. Choose MD or Markdown as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .md file and open it in a Markdown editor to check headings, lists, links, and paragraph breaks.

This online method requires no installed software and is available free of charge.

Using command-line tools: For a text-based PDF, extract its characters with Poppler's pdftotext:

pdftotext -layout input.pdf extracted.txt

The -layout option tries to retain columns and spacing. Open extracted.txt, add Markdown heading markers, list markers, links, and code fences where needed, then save it as output.md. This produces cleaner results than pretending that pdftotext automatically understands Markdown structure.

For automated conversion, a document parser such as Pandoc can convert an intermediate format:

pandoc input.docx -t gfm -o output.md

Pandoc generally does not interpret arbitrary PDFs as structured input, so first export the PDF to DOCX or HTML with a suitable desktop application, then run Pandoc on that intermediate file.

For scanned PDFs: run OCR before extraction. OCRmyPDF can add a searchable text layer:

ocrmypdf --deskew input.pdf searchable.pdf

Then extract from searchable.pdf with pdftotext. In a desktop PDF application, use its OCR command, often found under Scan & OCR → Recognize Text, before exporting or copying the content.

Quality and compatibility limitations

PDF-to-Markdown conversion is an extraction process, not a layout-preserving export. Multi-column pages may be read in the wrong order; headers, footers, page numbers, tables, footnotes, hyperlinks, equations, and captions may require manual correction.

Images normally need separate extraction and Markdown references such as ![Caption](images/figure-1.png). A Markdown file cannot reproduce PDF pagination, positioned elements, embedded fonts, or print fidelity.

OCR introduces character errors, especially in low-resolution scans, unusual fonts, mathematical notation, and handwritten content. Verify names, numbers, URLs, table values, and legal wording against the original PDF before publishing or archiving the converted file.
