Convert PDF to INP

A publisher, printer, or collaborator may require an editable InPage .inp file after receiving Urdu text only as a PDF. The usable process is to recover the PDF’s text, rebuild its layout in InPage, and save the native document.

PDF and INP formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout format used by publishers, offices, government bodies, printers, and engineering applications for documents that should display consistently. It can contain selectable text, embedded fonts, vector artwork, images, or scanned page images, but it usually does not retain text-flow and editing structure.

For InPage, .inp is the application’s native document format for Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and mixed-language page composition. It preserves editable InPage text, page layout, and InPage-specific typography better than a PDF, allowing further correction before the document is exported or printed as PDF.

INP is an ambiguous extension. Abaqus, EPA SWMM, and other technical programs also use incompatible .inp input files. If the recipient needs an Abaqus or SWMM model, a PDF cannot be directly converted into one; the model must be recreated in that software.

Convert a PDF for InPage

1. Confirm the required InPage edition and ask for a sample .inp file if a publisher or printer will open it. Older and newer InPage releases may differ in Unicode handling and compatibility.
2. Check whether the PDF contains selectable text. Select and copy a short Urdu passage into a Unicode-capable text editor; verify that characters, punctuation, numerals, and right-to-left order remain correct.
3. For a text-based PDF, export text with Adobe Acrobat Pro using File → Export To → Text, or export to DOCX if that produces cleaner paragraphs. Copy the cleaned text into InPage, or use InPage’s text-import function when the installed edition supports the chosen text encoding.
4. For a scanned PDF, run Urdu OCR before importing. Adobe Acrobat Pro and ABBYY FineReader are desktop options; Adobe Acrobat’s online PDF-to-Word service and Google Drive OCR can be used for non-sensitive files. Proofread the OCR output before layout work.
5. Create the required page size, margins, columns, fonts, headings, tables, images, and page numbering in InPage. Paste or import the corrected text, then apply the required Nastaliq or other font settings.
6. Save the editable source with File → Save As as an InPage .inp document. Open the saved file in the recipient’s InPage version when possible, then export or print a PDF proof for review.

Text and layout checks

OCR and PDF extraction commonly damage Urdu ligatures, diacritics, punctuation, Arabic and Western numerals, line breaks, and the order of mixed Urdu-English text. Compare every heading, name, date, amount, quotation, table cell, and footnote against the original PDF.

PDF coordinates do not become editable InPage layout. Complex pages containing tables, calligraphy, text over images, multi-column content, or embedded fonts normally require manual reconstruction. Extract images separately at adequate resolution instead of repeatedly screenshotting PDF pages.

Do not rely on a website claiming direct PDF-to-INP conversion. General converters can extract text or create DOCX files, but they cannot reliably create a valid, formatted InPage document. Avoid uploading confidential manuscripts, legal records, or client documents to online OCR services unless their retention and privacy terms are acceptable.

Keep the final .inp, the original PDF, and any linked images together. A recipient may need the same InPage version and installed fonts to reproduce the intended typography; a supplied PDF proof remains the dependable reference for final appearance.
