Older Adobe PageMaker workflows may require a native .pmd publication when a printer or archive cannot accept the supplied PDF. The conversion is usually a reconstruction or a placed-page workaround, because PDF preserves finished appearance while PMD stores an editable PageMaker layout.
What the PDF format is
PDF, or Portable Document Format, preserves page dimensions, fonts, images, vector graphics, and object positions across operating systems and printers. Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, web browsers, scanners, and desktop-publishing programs create PDFs used for print proofs, office documents, invoices, manuals, scanned records, and archives.
A PDF can contain selectable text and independent vector or raster objects, or it can consist only of scanned page images. Its internal structure determines what can be recovered as editable content.
What the PMD format is
PMD commonly means an Adobe PageMaker publication file. It stores text frames, columns, page and master-page settings, styles, placed graphics, and publication preferences. Linked images and fonts may remain outside the PMD file, so the publication is not necessarily self-contained.
PMD is a discontinued, proprietary format used for brochures, newsletters, books, and other print layouts. Current Adobe InDesign, Scribus, and Affinity Publisher applications do not normally export native PMD files. A PDF placed in PageMaker remains a page graphic; its paragraphs, tables, and images do not become separate PageMaker objects.
PMD can also mean a MikuMikuDance polygon model. A PDF-to-PMD conversion is not applicable to that format because a MikuMikuDance PMD contains 3D meshes, bones, materials, and model data rather than page content.
How to create a PMD publication from a PDF
For a visual copy of the PDF, use Adobe PageMaker 6.5 or later on a compatible licensed legacy installation. PageMaker is discontinued and may require an older Windows computer or virtual machine; test the complete workflow before committing production files.
- Install PageMaker and, where required, Adobe's old PDF Import Filter 1.0. Adobe documentation associated the filter with PageMaker 6.5 and later, but the original download may no longer be hosted. Obtain legacy software only from a legitimate licensed source.
- Create a publication matching the PDF's page size, orientation, margins, and page count. Set the correct measurement units and output settings before placing artwork.
- Use File → Place to import the PDF. If the filter accepts only one page at a time, place each page on its corresponding PageMaker page. Do not assume that a multipage PDF becomes a multipage editable publication.
- If PageMaker cannot import the PDF, convert each page to EPS with a compatible desktop utility, such as an older Acrobat Pro workflow or Ghostscript, and place the resulting
.epsfiles with File → Place. Check the EPS output at the intended print size. - Save the publication with File → Save As and a
.pmdfilename. Store the PMD file, placed PDF or EPS files, fonts, and any other linked resources in a preserved project folder. - Reopen the saved publication on the target PageMaker installation, inspect every page, and print or export a proof before delivery.
How to rebuild editable content
When the recipient needs editable text and objects rather than a visual page copy, extract the source components and rebuild the publication. In Acrobat Pro, export selectable text to DOCX or RTF and extract images separately; then recreate text frames, styles, columns, and graphics in PageMaker. A scanned PDF needs OCR first, and OCR output requires proofreading because columns, line breaks, ligatures, reading order, and special characters can be wrong.
Online services such as Adobe Acrobat online, CloudConvert, and Zamzar can provide intermediate PDF-to-DOCX, PDF-to-RTF, or PDF-to-image conversions, but they do not reliably generate native PMD files. Do not upload confidential documents to a third-party service without checking its retention and privacy terms. For sensitive or print-critical files, use local software.
If PMD is not mandatory, rebuild the layout in a current application such as InDesign, Scribus, or Affinity Publisher and deliver PDF, IDML, or the application's native project format instead. These programs can import or place PDF content, but they cannot normally save it as PageMaker PMD.
Quality and compatibility limits
A placed PDF or EPS preserves the page's visual appearance but offers little or no independent editing. PageMaker may reject PDFs containing newer compression, encryption, transparency, multimedia, or color-management features. EPS conversion can flatten transparency, alter overprints, substitute fonts, or change color output.
Vector content generally remains sharp when placed as PDF or EPS. Raster content cannot gain detail through conversion; retain the original embedded resolution and use approximately 300 ppi at final print size for ordinary press images unless the printer specifies another requirement. Avoid unnecessary rasterization of pages because it enlarges files and can make text appear soft.
Keep the original PDF as the reference copy, collect every linked asset, verify font availability and licensing, and compare the PMD proof with the source for page dimensions, bleeds, line wrapping, image cropping, transparency, and color. No converter can reliably infer a fully editable PageMaker layout from a finished PDF.

Frequently asked questions
Will my PDF become fully editable in PMD?
Usually not: a PDF page imported into PMD is often treated as a placed object or image rather than separate editable text, frames, and graphics. To make it editable, the publication generally has to be rebuilt manually from the PDF.
Will the fonts and layout stay the same when converting PDF to PMD?
They may change if the original fonts are unavailable or if the PDF uses effects that PMD cannot reproduce. Text wrapping, spacing, transparency, clipping, and complex vector elements can shift or become flattened.
What happens to PDF quality when I convert it to PMD?
Quality depends on how each PDF page is brought into PMD: rasterized pages depend on the source resolution, while reconstructed text and vector artwork can remain sharper. Higher-resolution page images preserve more detail but make the PMD publication heavier and less flexible to edit.
Why does my PDF look wrong or fail when opened as a PMD publication?
PDF features such as encryption, embedded fonts, transparency, annotations, forms, and complex graphics may not be supported by the legacy PMD format. Such content can be omitted, substituted, flattened, or require manual rebuilding.
