Understanding PDF and SAM file formats

SAM files are associated with Ami Pro, a word processing software developed by Lotus. The SAM format was used to save documents created in Ami Pro, which was popular in the 1990s. SAM files are not widely supported by modern software, making conversion from PDF to SAM a niche requirement.

How to convert PDF to SAM

Direct conversion from PDF to SAM is not natively supported by most modern software due to the obsolescence of the SAM format. However, you can use a two-step process:

1. Convert the PDF to a more common editable format, such as RTF or DOC.
2. Open the converted file in Ami Pro (if available) and save it as a SAM file.

If you do not have access to Ami Pro, you may need to use a virtual machine with an older operating system and Ami Pro installed.

Recommended software for conversion

• Adobe Acrobat: Use File → Export To → Microsoft Word to convert PDF to DOC or RTF.
• Ami Pro: Open the DOC or RTF file and use File → Save As to save as a SAM file.
• Zamzar or Online2PDF: Online converters can help convert PDF to DOC or RTF, but not directly to SAM.

Important considerations

• SAM files are obsolete and may not be compatible with modern systems.
• Formatting may be lost during conversion, especially with complex PDFs.
