Free online MMD to MD converter

Projects that accept only standard Markdown, such as Git repositories and documentation systems, may require a MultiMarkdown source saved as .md. Converting it preserves the document as editable Markdown while improving compatibility with editors and publishing tools.

What the MMD format is

MMD is commonly a MultiMarkdown source document: a plain-text file using Markdown syntax plus extensions for metadata, footnotes, tables, citations, definition lists, and other document features. MultiMarkdown and applications such as MultiMarkdown Composer can create or edit these files; some writing applications also export MultiMarkdown with the .mmd extension.

An MMD file is not a binary document. Its contents can be opened in a text editor, but MultiMarkdown-specific syntax may not be understood by every Markdown application.

What the MD format is

MD is the conventional filename extension for Markdown source files. Markdown is used for README files, technical documentation, static-site content, notes, and version-controlled documents.

Saving the content as .md makes it easier to open in GitHub, GitLab, Visual Studio Code, Obsidian, static-site generators, and Markdown editors. The extension alone does not define one universal Markdown dialect; CommonMark, GitHub Flavored Markdown, and other variants support different features.

How to convert MMD to MD

Use the built-in online converter

1. Open the MMD-to-MD converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .mmd file or select it from your device.
3. Choose MD as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .md file, then open it in a Markdown editor to check headings, links, tables, footnotes, and metadata.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable when the file contains ordinary MultiMarkdown syntax.

Convert locally with Pandoc

Pandoc can parse MultiMarkdown and write a normalized Markdown file. From a terminal, run:

pandoc input.mmd -f markdown_mmd -t markdown -o output.md

For GitHub-compatible output, use:

pandoc input.mmd -f markdown_mmd -t gfm -o output.md

Replace input.mmd with the source filename and output.md with the desired output path. Pandoc is preferable when conversion must be repeatable, local, or scriptable.

Rename only when no conversion is needed

If the file uses only ordinary Markdown syntax and the receiving application rejects the .mmd extension, make a copy and rename it from filename.mmd to filename.md. Renaming changes the filename, not the content, so it does not translate MultiMarkdown-only features.

Compatibility and limitations

MultiMarkdown metadata, citation syntax, footnotes, tables, transclusions, and special attributes may be rewritten, omitted, or represented differently in standard Markdown. Pandoc's markdown_mmd reader and gfm writer provide more predictable results than changing the extension, but GitHub Flavored Markdown does not support every MultiMarkdown feature.

Inspect the converted file in the target application, especially if it contains raw HTML, image paths, reference links, citations, or embedded content. Keep the original .mmd file as the source of record because conversion to a less feature-rich Markdown dialect can be lossy.
