Programs and devices that cannot read Mermaid source files often require a rendered image for sharing, reports, presentations, or image editing. Converting an MMD file to JPG renders its diagram as a static bitmap; it does not preserve the editable source or diagram structure.

What the MMD format is

In the mind maps and flowcharts context, .mmd usually identifies a Mermaid diagram source file. It is a plain-text document containing Mermaid syntax for flowcharts, sequence diagrams, class diagrams, state diagrams, mind maps, and related visualizations.

Mermaid files are commonly created in Mermaid Live Editor, Markdown editors with Mermaid support, documentation systems, code repositories, and diagramming applications that export Mermaid source. An MMD file stores instructions such as node labels, connections, directions, and styles rather than the finished drawing, so a normal image viewer cannot display it directly.

What the JPG format is

JPG (also called JPEG) is a widely supported raster-image format. It works well for attaching a diagram to email, inserting it into office documents, uploading it to websites, and viewing it on phones or other devices without Mermaid support.

JPG uses lossy compression, which produces smaller files but can soften small text and thin connector lines. It also has no transparency channel. PNG or SVG is usually better when the diagram must remain sharp or retain a transparent background, but JPG is suitable when broad compatibility and compact size are the priority.

How to convert MMD to JPG

Using the built-in converter on 101convert

  1. Open the MMD-to-JPG conversion page on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or drag the .mmd file into the upload area.
  3. Choose JPG as the output format if the page presents a format selector, then start the conversion.
  4. Download the rendered .jpg file when processing finishes.

This method requires no software installation. The source must contain valid Mermaid syntax, and the result reflects the renderer's supported Mermaid version and default styling.

Using Mermaid CLI and ImageMagick

For repeatable local conversions, install Mermaid CLI with Node.js and npm:

npm install -g @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli

Render the source to a PNG:

mmdc -i diagram.mmd -o diagram.png -b white

Convert the rendered PNG to JPG with ImageMagick:

magick diagram.png -quality 92 diagram.jpg

The -b white option gives the JPG a solid background because JPG cannot store transparency. Increase the render dimensions before conversion when the diagram contains dense labels; for example, use -w 2400 with Mermaid CLI, or render to SVG and rasterize that SVG at the required dimensions.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion executes the Mermaid code, so syntax errors, unsupported diagram types, missing fonts, or unsupported directives can prevent rendering or change the appearance. Open the MMD file in a text editor first if you need to check its contents; it should contain Mermaid declarations such as flowchart TD or mindmap.

JPG resolution is fixed at conversion time. Use a larger render size for printed pages or diagrams with small text, then inspect the exported image at 100% zoom. Re-saving a JPG repeatedly causes additional compression, so keep the original MMD and, when possible, an intermediate PNG or SVG for future exports.
