What the SMMX format is

.smmx is the native mind-map format used by SimpleMind. It stores the map's structured content, including topics, branches, notes, links, icons, styles, relationships, and layout information. SimpleMind creates and opens SMMX files on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

An SMMX file remains editable in SimpleMind because its branches are stored as separate map elements. It is not a conventional picture file, so image viewers and many websites cannot display it directly.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster image format supported by browsers, office applications, social platforms, printers, and almost every image viewer. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files relatively small but can soften text and introduce artifacts around thin lines.

JPG is suitable when the mind map only needs to be viewed, embedded, shared, or printed as a static image. It does not preserve editable branches, map metadata, links, or SimpleMind-specific styling as separate objects.

How to convert SMMX to JPG

Using SimpleMind

1. Install or open SimpleMind on a computer or mobile device that can read the file.
2. Open the .smmx file in SimpleMind.
3. Adjust the map before exporting: expand collapsed branches, choose the required theme, fit the map on screen, and remove or add elements that should appear in the image.
4. Use File → Export → Image on desktop, or the equivalent Share/Export → Image command on a mobile version.
5. Select JPG/JPEG as the image format, choose the output resolution or quality when available, select a destination, and save the file.

If the installed SimpleMind version exports only PNG, save the PNG first and convert it to JPG with an image editor such as Preview, Paint, GIMP, or another desktop image application. Open the PNG, choose File → Export or Save as, select JPEG, set the quality, and save a new file.

You can also convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the SMMX file, choose JPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Review the privacy requirements first if the mind map contains confidential material.

Quality and compatibility considerations

JPG conversion renders the map as one flattened image. Text cannot be edited as text afterward, and links or collapsed branches are not interactive. Keep the original SMMX file when future editing is possible.

For maps with small labels, dense branches, or fine connector lines, use the highest available export resolution and JPG quality. PNG is usually better for sharp text and line art because it does not add JPEG compression artifacts; use JPG when file size or application compatibility requires it.

Check the complete exported image at 100% scale. Very large maps may produce text that is technically present but unreadable at normal page or screen size; rearranging or splitting the map in SimpleMind before export may produce a more usable result.
