What the ITMZ format is

ITMZ is the native mind-map document format used by iThoughts and related iThoughts applications on Windows, macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. It stores the map structure, including topics, branches, notes, links, formatting, and potentially attached media, so the file remains editable in compatible software.

You normally encounter ITMZ files when someone sends an iThoughts mind map or when a map is saved from the application. Standard image viewers and office programs generally cannot open ITMZ directly.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, image viewers, office applications, email clients, and most mobile devices. It is suitable for sharing a visual snapshot of a mind map, but its lossy compression can soften small text and thin connector lines.

JPG is useful when the recipient only needs to view or print the map, not rearrange its branches. It does not retain ITMZ topics, notes, hyperlinks, or editable layout data.

How to convert ITMZ to JPG

Using iThoughts

1. Open the .itmz file in iThoughts.
2. Check the map layout, page orientation, scaling, and whether collapsed branches should be expanded.
3. Choose File → Export and select JPEG/JPG or an image export option.
4. Set the image size or resolution if the application offers those controls. Use a larger output size when the map contains small labels.
5. Choose a destination, enter a filename ending in .jpg, and save the export.

If the installed iThoughts version exports only PNG, save the map as PNG first and convert that image to JPG with the operating system’s image editor. PNG is often preferable for a map containing fine text, but JPG is more widely accepted in some upload and sharing workflows.

Very large maps may be scaled down, split across pages, or produce an image with unreadably small text depending on the export settings.
