What the ITMZ format is

ITMZ is the native mind-map format used by iThoughts and iThoughtsX. It stores the map structure, including topics, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, icons, task data, and formatting. iThoughts applications create ITMZ files on supported desktop and mobile platforms, so the format commonly appears when transferring a map from an iPad, iPhone, Mac, or Windows installation.

ITMZ is an application project format rather than a generic interchange standard. Other mind-mapping programs may not open it directly, and changing the filename extension does not convert the internal data.

What the EMMX format is

EMMX is the native document format of EdrawMind. It is intended for editable mind maps and can preserve branches, boundaries, summaries, relationships, notes, labels, hyperlinks, attachments, and visual styling supported by EdrawMind.

Use EMMX when the recipient works in EdrawMind or when the map must remain editable there. A native EMMX document generally retains more structure than a PDF or image export, but features specific to iThoughts may not have an exact EdrawMind equivalent.

How to convert ITMZ to EMMX

The simplest method is the converter provided on 101convert.com:

OPML commonly preserves the hierarchy and text but may discard colors, images, relationships, icons, task metadata, and precise positioning. FreeMind can preserve more map-oriented structure, but unsupported styling and attachments may still be dropped.

Always keep the original ITMZ file as a backup. After conversion, verify collapsed branches, cross-links, rich-text notes, embedded images, and non-Latin text in EdrawMind. If exact appearance is required, export a PDF from iThoughts alongside the EMMX file as a visual reference; PDF preserves appearance but is not an editable replacement.
