EMMX is the native EdrawMind document format for editable mind maps. It can preserve the topic hierarchy together with map-specific information such as branches, relationships, boundaries, summaries, themes, page layout, notes, and other visual properties that OPML does not define.
Use EMMX when the destination is EdrawMind and the map must remain editable. It is less suitable as a general interchange format because it is associated with EdrawMind rather than being a broadly standardized outline format.
How to actually convert OPML to EMMX
Using EdrawMind
- Keep a copy of the original
.opmlfile, especially if it contains feed subscriptions or application-specific attributes. - Open EdrawMind and choose File → Import, then select OPML. In versions that show import options on the start screen, choose Import → OPML instead.
- Select the OPML file and confirm the import. EdrawMind should create a central topic from the outline root and convert nested
outlineelements into child branches. - Check the resulting map for missing notes, hyperlinks, labels, or unusual nesting. Rearrange the layout and apply a theme if the source was a plain outline.
- Choose File → Save as or File → Export, select the EdrawMind format, and save the result with the
.emmxextension.
