What the OPML format is

OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) is an XML-based format for hierarchical outlines. An OPML file stores nested headings, text, and optional attributes such as URLs, notes, or RSS feed information; it does not normally store mind-map styling, boundaries, images, or free-positioned nodes.

What the XMIND format is

XMind uses .xmind files for mind maps, logical diagrams, brainstorming boards, and structured notes. An XMind document can contain a central topic, child topics, branches, labels, notes, hyperlinks, markers, boundaries, relationships, and visual themes.

Unlike OPML, XMind is designed for visual editing. Its map layouts make hierarchy easier to inspect, while its topic properties support presentation and further organization. The exact internal package structure varies between XMind generations, so conversion should be performed by software that supports the target XMind version.

How to actually convert OPML to XMIND

Using XMind desktop

1. Open XMind and choose File → Import.
2. Select the OPML import option, then choose the source file with the .opml extension.
3. Review the imported outline. The OPML root becomes the map or main topic, and nested outline items become child topics.
4. Save the result with File → Save As and choose the XMind format, producing a .xmind file.

Menu names vary by XMind release. If the import command is not visible, update XMind or use the application’s supported import formats before attempting a manual conversion.

Using the online converter

2. Upload the .opml file and select XMIND as the output format.
3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .xmind file and open it in XMind.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion primarily preserves the parent-child hierarchy and text. OPML attributes such as feed URLs, custom XML fields, comments, and application-specific metadata may become topic notes, hyperlinks, or may be omitted, depending on the converter.

OPML has no universal representation for XMind-only features such as floating topics, relationships, boundaries, markers, images, themes, or exact branch positioning. Check the resulting map and recreate those elements manually when they matter.

For a large outline, validate several nesting levels, special characters, links, and empty topics after conversion. Keep the original OPML as the archival copy because saving the map back to XMind does not provide a lossless round trip to OPML.
