What the MINDNODE format is

XMind can import FreeMind maps, making .mm a practical interchange format when direct MINDNODE import is unavailable. The resulting workbook is saved as an .xmind file.

How to convert MINDNODE to XMIND

1. Open the .mindnode document in MindNode. If the file is a package or cloud-synchronized document, open it from Finder or MindNode rather than changing its extension.
2. In MindNode, choose File → Export → FreeMind and save the result as a .mm file. Menu names can vary slightly by MindNode version.
3. Open XMind and choose File → Import → FreeMind.
4. Select the exported .mm file and inspect the imported map, including branch order, notes, labels, and relationships.
5. Save the imported workbook with File → Save As and use the .xmind extension. Do not merely rename .mindnode or .mm; the internal document structure would remain unchanged.

Quality and compatibility limitations
