What the XMMAP format is

XMMAP is a mind-map file format associated with XMind and related mind-mapping workflows. It stores a map’s central topic, branches, relationships, notes, labels, and other diagram data rather than presenting the map as a flat image.

You may encounter XMMAP files exported by an older or specialized XMind-related application, received from another user, or recovered from an archive. Because extensions and internal structures can vary between XMind releases, identify the program that created the file before choosing an import method.

What the XMIND format is

.xmind is the native workbook format used by XMind. An XMIND workbook can contain one or more editable sheets with topics, subtopics, links, boundaries, summaries, markers, notes, attachments, and presentation or layout information.

XMIND is preferable when the destination is XMind or another application that explicitly supports XMind workbooks. Unlike PDF or PNG export, it retains editable topic hierarchy and diagram objects.

How to convert XMMAP to XMIND

1. Open the XMMAP-to-XMIND conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the source file with Select file or the equivalent upload control, then select the .xmmap file.
3. Set the output format to XMIND if it is not selected automatically.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .xmind file when processing finishes.
5. Open the output in XMind and check several branches, notes, hyperlinks, labels, and attachments before deleting the original.

The online conversion is free and does not require installing software. Do not upload maps containing confidential project, customer, or personal information unless the service’s handling policy is acceptable for that data.

Using compatible desktop software

If the file was created by an XMind-related desktop release, try opening it directly in that application, then use File → Save As or File → Export and choose .xmind. If the application offers an import command, use File → Import, select the XMMAP file, inspect the imported map, and save it as an XMIND workbook.

If XMind reports that the file is unsupported, do not simply rename .xmmap to .xmind. Renaming changes only the filename extension; it does not convert the internal data structure. Use the original creating application or the converter instead.

Compatibility and limitations

Basic hierarchy usually converts more reliably than application-specific styling. Verify floating topics, relationship arrows, summaries, boundaries, custom themes, notes, hyperlinks, attachments, images, and task metadata because unsupported features may be omitted or changed.

Keep the original XMMAP file as a backup and open the converted workbook in the target XMind version. If the map contains embedded files or external links, check that those resources remain available after conversion; some converters preserve the reference but not the embedded content.
