What the XMMAP format is

XMMAP is a mind-map document format associated with older XMind map workflows. It stores a hierarchical diagram such as a central topic, branches, labels, notes, hyperlinks, and presentation information. You may encounter it in files created by older XMind installations or exported from XMind-compatible software.

XMMAP is not the same as the current .xmind package format used by newer XMind releases. Do not change the filename extension manually: renaming map.xmmap to map.mm does not convert its internal structure.

What the MM format is

MM is the XML-based mind-map format used primarily by FreeMind and supported by several other mind-mapping applications. An MM file represents topics as nested nodes and can retain common properties such as node text, links, icons, notes, folding state, and basic formatting.

MM is useful when compatibility with FreeMind, Freeplane, or older mind-map tools matters. Its plain XML structure is also easier to inspect, version, and archive than a proprietary project container, although it cannot represent every feature available in XMind.

How to convert XMMAP to MM

Using XMind is the most appropriate desktop method when the file comes from an XMind workflow:

1. Make a backup of the original map.xmmap file.
2. Install an XMind version that supports the legacy XMMAP file, then open the file with File → Open. If the application does not recognize it, use the XMind release that created the map or check whether the file is actually an older XMind package with a changed extension.
3. After the map loads, select File → Export and choose FreeMind or FreeMind Map (*.mm) as the output format. Menu names vary between XMind releases.
4. Choose an output folder, save the result as map.mm, and open it in FreeMind or Freeplane to verify the hierarchy and links.

Compatibility and limitations

MM export generally preserves the topic hierarchy and basic text, but advanced XMind features can be lost. Check boundaries, summaries, floating topics, labels, attachments, task information, themes, images, relationship lines, notes, and hyperlinks after conversion; support depends on both the XMMAP reader and the MM exporter.

Keep the original XMMAP file if the map contains images or other embedded resources. Some exporters embed images in the MM XML, while others reference separate files, so moving only map.mm can produce missing graphics. If the converted file opens as blank or malformed, the XMMAP may use a legacy schema that the installed XMind version cannot read; opening it in the original application and exporting from there is more reliable than editing the extension or XML manually.
