People convert XMAP files when they need to open an older XMind map in FreeMind or Freeplane, both of which use the .mm format. The conversion also provides a plain XML-based file that is easier to inspect, archive, and exchange than a legacy XMind package.
What the XMAP format is
.xmap is the map-file extension associated with older XMind versions, particularly XMind 2008. An XMAP file can contain a mind-map structure with topics, relationships, notes, labels, hyperlinks, markers, boundaries, and sometimes multiple sheets.
XMAP files are normally created and opened by legacy XMind software. Current XMind releases primarily use the .xmind format, so a modern installation may not open every XMAP file directly. The file may also be a packaged document rather than a single plain XML document; renaming it to .zip is not a conversion and can expose implementation files without producing a usable mind map.
What the MM format is
.mm is the XML map format used by FreeMind and supported by Freeplane and several other mind-mapping applications. It stores the map as a hierarchy of nodes, with attributes for text, links, icons, notes, folding state, formatting, and some graphical relationships.
MM is useful when the recipient uses FreeMind or Freeplane, when a readable XML representation is preferred, or when the map must be moved between compatible open-source mind-mapping tools. It is not a page-layout format: visual styling, complex boundaries, summaries, sheet structures, and application-specific objects may not have equivalent MM elements.
How to actually convert XMAP to MM
Using XMind is the most reliable method because it can interpret the source map before exporting its supported structure.
- Make a backup copy of the original
.xmapfile. - Install a version of XMind that supports XMind 2008/XMAP files. If a current release rejects the file, use the legacy XMind release that created it or a compatible XMind 8 installation.
- Open the file through File → Open. Check the map visually, including branches, notes, hyperlinks, markers, and any additional sheets.
- Choose File → Export, select FreeMind or FreeMind map as the output format, and save the result with an
.mmextension. - Open the exported file in FreeMind or Freeplane and inspect the hierarchy, links, notes, and formatting. If the workbook contains several sheets, export each sheet separately when the exporter does not include all sheets in one MM file.
You can also convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Download the resulting .mm file and validate it in FreeMind or Freeplane rather than relying only on the conversion status.
Quality and compatibility limitations
MM represents a single mind-map tree more directly than XMAP represents a complete XMind workbook. During export, XMind-only features such as sheet tabs, advanced themes, task metadata, summaries, floating topics, relationships, boundaries, attachments, and rich note formatting may be removed, simplified, or converted into ordinary nodes.
Preserve the original XMAP as the authoritative copy. After conversion, compare branch counts and open every important hyperlink; relative links and embedded resources can break when the map is moved to another directory. If the exported file will be edited by software other than FreeMind, validate that application’s MM support because implementations differ in their handling of styling and extensions.
