A PNG copy is useful when a mind map must be inserted into a document, presentation, web page, or image editor that cannot open an XMAP file. Exporting also preserves a visual snapshot for sharing and archiving, but the resulting PNG is no longer structurally editable as a mind map.

What the XMAP format is

XMAP is a legacy XML-based mind-map workbook format associated with XMind 2007/2008. It stores the map hierarchy, topic text, relationships, notes, boundaries, labels, hyperlinks, and visual styling as structured data rather than as pixels.

You usually encounter an XMAP file when opening an older XMind project or receiving a map created with an earlier XMind release. Standard image viewers and most general-purpose image editors cannot render XMAP directly because they do not interpret its mind-map structure.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster image format supported by browsers, office applications, presentation software, image editors, and operating systems. It is suitable for mind maps because it keeps text and line edges sharper than JPEG at the same dimensions and can preserve transparent backgrounds when the exporting application provides that option.

A PNG contains only the rendered appearance of the map. It does not retain topics as editable objects, map hierarchy, hyperlinks, notes, or XMind styling metadata.

How to convert XMAP to PNG

Using XMind

  1. Install or open an XMind release that supports legacy XMAP workbooks, then choose File → Open and select the .xmap file.
  2. Check the map after import. Confirm that non-Latin text, icons, notes, relationship arrows, and custom fonts were rendered correctly.
  3. Choose File → Export, select an image or bitmap export option, and choose PNG as the output format. Menu names differ between XMind releases; some versions expose this as File → Export → Image.
  4. Set the export area to the whole map rather than only the current selection. Increase the image scale or pixel dimensions if the PNG will be printed or placed on a large slide.
  5. Choose the destination filename, such as project-map.png, and complete the export. Open the PNG in an image viewer before distributing it.

If you do not have compatible desktop software, you can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the XMAP file, select PNG, start the conversion, and download the rendered image if the file is accepted.

Quality and compatibility considerations

PNG compression is lossless, but it cannot restore detail that was omitted during rendering. A large map exported at screen size may produce unreadably small text; use a higher scale or export to a larger canvas, then inspect the result at 100% zoom.

Legacy XMAP files may contain fonts, icons, or themes unavailable in newer XMind versions. Missing fonts can change line wrapping and expand the map, while unsupported icons or embedded content may disappear. Save a copy of the original XMAP before opening and resaving it in newer software, because resaving can change its legacy format or cause unsupported features to be discarded.
