People convert XMI to PNG when a UML or diagram model must be viewed in software that cannot open XMI, embedded in documentation, or shared as a fixed image. The conversion renders the model's diagram rather than simply renaming the file.
What the XMI format is
XMI, or XML Metadata Interchange, is an XML-based exchange format for structured models, especially UML classes, components, activities, states, and relationships. UML and modeling programs such as Sparx Enterprise Architect, IBM Rational software, Eclipse Papyrus, and Cameo Systems Modeler can create or export XMI files.
XMI is common when transferring a model between modeling tools, storing a model in a version-control system, or exchanging a flowchart-like UML activity or state diagram. An XMI file normally contains model objects and relationships; it may also contain diagram positions and styling, but support for those visual details varies between applications and XMI dialects.
What the PNG format is
PNG is a raster image format that stores a rendered diagram as pixels. It is suitable for inserting mind maps, UML diagrams, and flowcharts into web pages, office documents, tickets, and presentations.
PNG supports lossless compression, sharp text at an appropriate resolution, and transparent backgrounds. It does not retain editable model elements, relationships, layers, or layout metadata, so it should be treated as an output image rather than a replacement for the original XMI file.
How to convert XMI to PNG
Using the online converter
- Open the XMI-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
- Choose the
.xmifile and select PNG as the output format. - Start the conversion and download the resulting
.pngfile when processing finishes.
This route is appropriate when the converter recognizes the XMI dialect and the file already contains enough diagram information to render. It requires no locally installed modeling software.
Using a UML or modeling application
- Open a program that supports the XMI dialect, such as Enterprise Architect or Eclipse Papyrus.
- Import the file using a command such as File → Import or Package → Import Package from XMI.
- Open the imported diagram. If the XMI contains only model elements, create a new class, activity, state, or component diagram and place the elements manually.
- Use the application's diagram image command, such as Diagram → Save Image to File or Export diagram.
- Select PNG, set the target resolution or image dimensions, choose transparency if required, and save the result as
diagram.png.
A modeling application is preferable when the file contains UML structure that a generic converter cannot interpret, or when you need to correct layout before rendering.
Quality and compatibility limits
XMI is not a single fully interchangeable diagram format. Different tools can use different UML versions, namespaces, extensions, and methods for storing diagram geometry. A file may import successfully while losing colors, connectors, labels, custom shapes, or page layout.
For a readable PNG, export at the diagram's intended print or display size rather than taking a screen capture. Increase pixel dimensions for diagrams with small labels, and use a transparent background only when the destination supports it. Keep the original XMI because PNG cannot be re-imported as an editable model.
